The Abbey Gardens, Tresco (Isles of Scilly)

On our recent trip to the Scillies we ‘had’ to include a visit to the famous semi-tropical Abbey Gardens. They didn’t disappoint, though £12 each to view them seemed a tad expensive. Luckily the weather was kind: we had a calm boat trip from St Mary’s and the sun shone.

Because we had walked nearly a mile from the quay to the gardens, I needed to sit down. What a blessing to find I could use a mobility scooter for free! It was fun.

As you can see, the planting is quite exotic, but my apologies that I didn’t note down any names for you.

I did like this ‘rock’ garden!

As usual, my photos really don’t do justice to the gardens, but it’s a taste :)

A lovely trip Sheila = and a good thing the scooter was free after such a big entrance fee! Hope you got good coffee and cakes as well.

The Scillies is just one of those places I'd love to visit - But as of yet still haven't managed to! One day I will...;o) Thanks for the introduction Sheila... :o)

I notice you had a warm coat on Sheila. It must have been cooler than it looks! Hope you didn't go too mad on that scooter ;). I nearly bought an Amelanchier today...thought of you when I looked at it. But in the end I chose a Lilac for the white blooms and scent. The Amelanchier is a little too colourful for the green and white garden.

Thanks for your lovely comments ladies!

Sue - we actually took our own sandwiches that day.

Tracey - hope you get there one day.

Karen - we were in anoraks and woolly hats most days as it was cool and very windy, but luckily fine and dry. I nearly fell off the scooter taking one corner too fast! Lilac is a good choice . . lovely to bring a spray indoors to enjoy the scent :)

What you like Sheila, that's cheating, although could have done with one myself in the past week, lol.
The gardens look really lovely and I would have enjoyed wandering around and spending a few hours there myself as well, thankyou for sharing another part of your holiday, I do enjoy seeing all these places....

Gorgeous place to wonder around. Thanks for the pictures Sheila. I would prefer to use scooter these days too. Some gardens and arboretums can be expansive. Looks like you had good time.

It certainly lives up to it's reputation,Sheila..a lovely place..a great idea to get the scooter,as it's a fair walk..I've always imagined it to be idyllic weather year round..seems they aren't exempt from the cool windy weather either..Glad you had a lovely time, and thanks for sharing.:o)

Thanks Lincslass - I'm all for "cheating" when necessary!

I'm glad you agree with the scooter Klahanie: good when you're on an island where no cars are allowed :)

Thank you Sandra - apparently the Scillies are warmer (and less windy?) in July and August, but we were happy to have dry weather.

We wnt many years ago as i said and i was amazed at allthe tropical flowers they could grow there, i think the bad winter of 2010 knocked them back a bit as it did for many subtropical gardens. .....beautiful though, and some gardn art about too....just remembered something, have they stillgot he display of ships figureheads that washed up on the islands?.

Pam, the Abbey Gardens have their own micro-climate as it's so sheltered there. Yes - there's a room displaying figureheads from the hundreds of wrecks: it's called Valhalla.

Thank you for your kind comment Siris :) (I had wanted to visit the Scillies for years . . didn't know they were so easy to get to).

I think we'd be a very chilly island without it Sheila......hope this "climate change" doesn't change it...

Looks absolutely stunning and I really like those archways with the huge tree fern (if that's what it is?) The scooter sounds fun - my family are trying to get me on a segway :)

7 May, 2015

Thanks Gee - yes, I love the archways too which are the remains of the old Abbey. Are you sure you could balance on a Segway??! (I almost fell off the scooter, but I was taking a corner at speed . . . )

Tresco will always be special to me because we spent our honeymoon there at the beautiful Island Hotel, when you didn't have to pay to see the gardens then!! they were not quite as colourful as they are now, but still thrilling all those years ago, I still have the photos, mostly black and white !! and although the sea was a beautiful blue it was freezing and that was in June!! thanks for the memories Sheila....
