Autumn colour has arrived in Hertfordshire!

Not quite as good as Vermont(!) but just thought I would take you on a brief stroll before the first frosts bring the leaves floating down :)

Some not-very-good photos, starting with Ceratostigma willmottianum getting too big for its boots

Viburnum sargentii ‘Onondaga’ . . . saw this years ago at an NGS garden in Devon, and the owner looked up the name for me

Liquidambar styraciflua

Aster frikartii monch with a lovely dark Sedum, and the ‘other’ Liquidambar in the background

Amelanchier lamarckii: we have never known a year when it has looked so good and retained its leaves for so long

Anemone ‘Wild Swan’ which has flowered for months, with Geranium ‘Black Beauty’ (found at Wisley many years ago) just into its second flowering

Bonsai Cotoneaster with tiny berries

OH’s favourite Acer (not Bloodgood, but don’t know the name) with Pieris ‘Forest Flame’

Happy Autumn everyone :))

Hi Terra - thank you :)

Beautiful. things don't seem to turn very red round here so thanks for the pics of yours! Have made a note of that anemone!

Thanks Stera - I imagine that you've heard of A. Wild Swan before? This pic doesn't show the backs, which are an attractive pale purple - love it!

Ditto, Sandra!

A lovely blog, Sheila - colours not die for. Visited an old friend on the other side of town this morning, sun was shining and trees and shrubs looked wonderful. I love your first photo, and the Amelanchier is beautiful.

Thank you very much Sandra and Susanne!

Fall can be amazing. Beautiful Sheila. I love the first "dreamy" photo. Our trees are starting to turn as well.

Hi Sheila...you certainly do have some lovely autumn foliage there. It must be because you've had more sunshine than us, as we don't have much at all here yet.

Anemone Wild Swan -- no I'm afraid it was a new one for me. Just looked it up and saw it was the Chelsea plant of the year in 2011. Where was I? Straight onto the wish list.

Thank you Klahanie . . . I agree.

Thanks Karen - sorry you haven't had as much sun as you'd like. We've had the sunniest and driest end-of-summer we can remember!

Stera - you'll love Anemone Wild Swan! Bought mine from Elizabeth McGregor in 2011, and it has started to spread a little :)

Have made a note of it, thanks.

Lovely autumn colours Sheila, my Amelanchier has already shed most of its leaves, no red ones this year it seemed to go from green to yellow and then they dropped, possibly the drowning it got earlier in the season and then hardly any rain for ages. I do like your Bonsai Cotoneaster, have you trained that yourself ?..

Some lovely autumn hues Sheila, and I just love that dark sedum together with the Aster, definitely a winning combination.

Thanks Lincs - but what a shame about your Amelanchier. Glad you like the Bonsai Cotoneaster . . . yes, gave it a little light pruning and it did the rest!

Thank you Phyllis for your kind comment, and nice to see you :))

All very pretty, Sheila. I love your 'Wild Swan' and the geranium, 'Black Beauty'. Things to look out for.
