The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

Does anyone belong to the Hardy Plant Society?

I’m getting quite excited, as I’ve only just discovered this society . . . found it by following links after watching last week’s Gardeners’ World. There was an amazing lady talking about her several beautiful Clematis at Bolam cottage in Northumberland. On her website there was a link to the H.P.S. – for £17 a year you can attend talks and plant sales, and visit members’ gardens.

Luckily, I live half-way between two local groups, and this Saturday there is a talk by Bob Brown of Cotswold Garden Flowers, telling us about his 30 favourite plants, so I’ve booked!

I’ll just take you for a short stroll, and show you a handful of my own favourites. Love my flowering quince at this time of year . .

. . . otherwise known as Chaenomales

Viburnum Onondaga just coming into leaf . .

Then we’ll walk up the garden,

to see if the Amelanchier is blossoming yet -

Almost!

Thanks for joining me. :)

I hope you enjoy it Sheila, its something to look forward to and very handy living between the two local groups.
Your garden is looking grand in the sunshine, I have taken a couple of cuttings out of my mum and dads garden of his quince, it was his favourite and hopefully they will take off for me then I`ll maybe have a pic like yours in a couple of years, my Amelanchier is about the same stage as yours, ready to burst into bloom any day now...

Thank you Scottish - yes it does sound great!

I'm sure I will Lincslass, and thanks for your comments. I've taken cuttings of my quince, and they have rooted, so it can't be difficult! We have just covered the Amelanchier with fleece as I'd be so upset if it got frosted because my gardening group are visiting next Tuesday - fingers crossed. :)

Yes Sheila I looked at their website and would love to visit Serge Hill Gardens. Unfortunately they are only open one Sunday in June and the group visit will also be on a Saturday. I don't live very far but I am free to visit Mondays-Fridays only. On Saturdays and Sundays I am a "prisoner" of the wife! LOL

Your garden looks so beautiful right now Sheila, at that brand new fresh stage.

Not Serge Hill Costas . . . this week it was Bolam Garden Cottage.

Thanks very much Sheilar (I seem to have quite a few plants which are difficult to pronounce, lol :)))

Thank you Pimm's - very kind. My garden is my sanctuary.

I saw that garden on GW Sheila, it was georgous wasn't it. I would love to visit, have to have a look online.
Your garden is looking lovely, hope the frost is not to bad tonight.

That quince is exquisite Sheila, I love looking around your garden.

Love the Quince and the garden Sheilabub. I`m sure you will enjoy Bob Browns talk, I often go on his website just to read his comments on his plants he can be very funny.

I have not heard of this society Sheilabub, I would very much like to join it. Your garden is beautiful by the way! :))

Thanks Willinilli, well our Pieris got 'got' by the frost, but the Amelanchier buds survived - phew.

Thank you Gran, Michaella and Stroller - yes, Bob Brown is quite an outspoken character, isn't he?!

6 Apr, 2012

Go for it Michaella! This morning I received my membership package: the HPS Journal, 2 newsletters and a booklet on Penstemons . . . so it looks good value. To go to the talk this afternoon just costs £2.

Lovely pics Sheila, hope you enjoyed the talk. Bob Brown's mad as a bag of frogs isn't he? I met him at Consall Hall Garden plant fair last week...so funny. Did I mention my Consall Hall Garden blog (she said innocently) Most fantastic gardens and also a link on my blog to their website and on their home page you can click on a link to a tele program about it which is fabulous. This garden really deserves for more people to know about it. Yes I've become a Consall Hall Gardens ambassador:-)

Thanks Ba, yes Bob Brown was very entertaining! I like the expression "mad as a bag of frogs" . . . he certainly had us all laughing. Incredible value as there was also a raffle of plants, tea and yummy chocolate cake, and a packet of seeds, all included in the £2.
I've just read your great blog on Consall Hall, and will attempt the link (will PM you if I don't manage it).

Do you have Cottage Garden flowers catalogue? most enjoyable read. I ordered some plants from him, via email, to bring to the plant fair. All were not available, but he brought what he could, mainly campanulas. One he brought from Turkey which he saw in a valley near a part completed dam. He saved many and one I had ordered was the fruit of his endeavours. Wouldn't be able to bring them into the country now. I'll put a pic on when it flowers:-)

8 Apr, 2012

Yes I do . . . and I agree, I like the way he "scores" his plants. Before the talk, the organiser suggested that I put in an order with Bob Brown, which I did. So he brought me 3 Phlox paniculata 'Jade' and 3 white poppies. I may do the same again before the Malvern Show!

8 Apr, 2012

Stroller, Sticki (I think) and I are going to the Malvern Show too. I always go as there is a coach I can use, I think it's on the Saturday. Which day are you going? Maybe we could have a little GOY meetup?:-)

8 Apr, 2012

A meetup would have been great, Ba . . . I would have loved to meet you and Stroller (I've already met Sticki, lol)! But we're going on the Thursday, and have a B&B booked for Wednesday night. Some other time?!

9 Apr, 2012

That Sticki sure gets about Sheila lol, I've met her too at Tetrarchs. I think it would be good, if on Goy, there was a meeting place page for those who wished to meet up at various shows or open gardens. Someone could say they were going to be at such and such a place and when, so any other GOYer who would like to meet up could. Or not be a that place at said time if not lol;-))

9 Apr, 2012

Excellent idea Ba! And enjoy your meetup . . .

Lovely photos again, Sheila ... :o) .......

I asked how to pronounce Chaenomales on a pic by Terra and apparently it's: 'keeno-maylees' ... I'll stick with Quince I think ... lol!

11 Apr, 2012

O - oh, I've always said Chee-nomalees, but then most of my gardening friends think I know what I'm talking about, lol!! Thanks for the comment Shirley. :)

11 Apr, 2012

Ha ha I've heard it pronounced ky nomalees on GQT....me...I just keep quiet:-)

12 Apr, 2012

You..keeping quiet,Ba,? never ! Lol.
