Tree seeds anyone? Cercis siliquastrum for free!

Our beautiful Judas tree . . . well, it will be beautiful when in flowers in April . . . has at least 100 seed pods hanging off it right now. If anyone would like to try germinating them, they’d be welcome to PM me their address, and I’ll send a few on – it seems such a waste to leave them there!

For anyone who doesn’t know it, Cercis siliquastrum blooms prolifically with pretty pink/mauve flowers which come before the leaves, is hardy and rarely grows to more than 20 ft. The seeds are best soaked in warm water, (can also be sandpapered), then sown in autumn: germination takes 3 – 4 weeks.

Sorry I haven’t got a picture, but you’ll find plenty if you Google it. :))

Is it delicate or bone hardy Sheila, we have planted lots of trees here some oak, horse chestnut and silver birches from seed I,d love to have a go but worry about its hardiness we,re open to the north and the east.

That's very thoughtful, Sheila.
Thank you...
However, no more room for new trees ...
... but I reckon Pam could plant some :o)

Thanks chaps. Well, Pam, my book says hardy . . . and you'd be welcome to try. I have SO many, you could have lots!!

I'd love to try but, like other GoYers - I just don't have the room! Nice of you to offer. :o)

I would love to give them ago so i will pm you my address. I have Cercis 'Avondale' in a very large pot and it is doing well.

Hello, Sheila! I have pm'ed you already! I'd love some of your seeds, fellow Goy'er Tony and myself are experimenting on Acer seeds at the moment...Tony has got two to germinate, woohoo! I haven't had any luck so far, but I'll give them a year before I chuck them on the compost heap!!

Thankyou Sheila for the offer, sadly have to decline but still appreciated...

4 Feb, 2012

H Sheila...I will gladly try. I don't have room for another tree, but it will be years before that becomes an issue and who knows, I may have a bigger garden by then! In the meantime, if they germinate, I can grow in pot.

Good thought Karen . . . I'm sure they must take years to get to any decent size. Btw, wish I'd collected some yesterday: will need boots to go outside today as the garden is covered in 4" of pristine white snow! (I shall enjoy it though :)))

5 Feb, 2012

I'll wait a bit I do love to see it as a white duvet.....

5 Feb, 2012

No snow here :)

5 Feb, 2012

we have 4" of snow too. lovely and pristine in the back garden. the front is all tramped over. out having fun with daughter. nice rosy cheeks now :o)

Seeds just arrived safely Sheila, thank you so much, I'm going to take a look at the best way to germinate them, the Magnolia seeds needed a period of cold, well I think we can provide that!!

8 Feb, 2012

yes my seeds are here too. and there is more snow falling as I 'type'. so I too will look to see if they need a cold spell too.

thanks again

You're very welcome!

Hi Sheila, I,ve just planted the seeds, the RHS book says plant in autumn in cold frame, so I,ve put the pots in the cold GH covered in some netting to deter the pests....., there were lots of seeds so I,ll let you know how they fare....

10 Feb, 2012

Its funny but I gathered some seeds found at our local crem. of this same tree, i have planted them but no sign as yet! I planted them last Sept.!!

11 Feb, 2012

Oh dear Gran! I've always thought that tree seeds were quite hard to germinate, and was very surprised that my book said Cercis only took 3 - 4 weeks. Maybe they need soaking and sandpapering (as above)??

Can easily send you some more if you've the optimism to try again!

11 Feb, 2012

I planted my magnolia seeds in the autumn and they didn't show until well into spring so don't give up yet....some trees can take a year or more.....

11 Feb, 2012

Thank you Sheila, I will see if the little ones rise above the soil, they certainly wont at the moment will they? What or how do you sandpaper these tiny little seeds? Thanks Pam. I will keep watching the pot!

11 Feb, 2012

Good question, Grandmage! Squeeze them between two emery boards?? Probably won't stay there, will they . . . better ask someone more practical, lol.

11 Feb, 2012

Some seeds you know have to be eaten before they will germinate, especially the red coated ones like hawthorn i,m told....

15 Feb, 2012

Umm - you are joking Pam?! Not sure I want to know any more . . :((

15 Feb, 2012

Don,t worry Sheila....its usually the birds...

16 Feb, 2012

I have read this too they have to go through the animal firsst and then excrete it and a new plant is born, amazing when you think about it Lol!! I have a clematis that came from you know where!!!!!!

16 Feb, 2012

Was the clematis in a "strange" place, Gran, so that you guessed what had happened? That is amazing . . . couldn't happen with conkers though, could it, lol!!

16 Feb, 2012

LOL Sheila, tears to the eyes!! Aint nature wonderful! The Clem. has just grown in an old chimney pot by the side of the house and I have bought so many and lost them and then given up on them but this one is gorgeous, a very dark maroon, my fave. colour.

17 Feb, 2012

Brilliant. :)))

17 Feb, 2012

Morning Sheila, we,ve been away over easter and guess what Hurray\0/ \0/ \0/. Seeds have germinated!, I,ve just been to the GH to water and there they are looking fragile but alive, its just keeping them that way now! Although a hammamelis I grew last year from seed has also survived.....whooppee

I,ll count them later...

14 Apr, 2012

Thanks for letting me know Pam! It's such a magical and heart-warming sight, isn't it . . . I know I have a smiley face each time I look at my pots and see that something new has germinated. Just now there are Salvia, Anthriscus, Nemophilia and Cosmos in the GH - going to have plenty of pricking out to keep me out of mischief, lol.

14 Apr, 2012

Hi Sheila because we,ve been away and so have my neighbours I haven't started any yet, except last year I collected lots of french marigold seeds that I sprinkled in some empty pots outside, I,m amazed that a lot of them have already germinated surviving the snow and frosts....

14 Apr, 2012

Isn't nature wonderful?!
