GoY Grandmothers!

Here comes another one . . . yes, hurray! . . . our first grandchild has just come into the world. She is called Chiara Grace – her mother, Gabriella, comes from an Italian family and Chiara is an Italian name. Isn’t it lovely?! We had such an excited phone call from our son, Mike, in Australia, so relieved that all was well. “She’s beautiful” he said, “just like her mum”! Bless. Here’s their wedding photo, so you can judge for yourselves. It was a lovely outdoor wedding in the garden of a winery! (no baby pics yet . . . )

Gabbi’s mum will be Nonna (Italian for grandmother): I wonder how many different names there are for Grandmothers (and Grandfathers, like Bampy) around the world, or even around Great Britain? Must be dozens! Do you GoYers know any unusual ones??

We’re looking forward to meeting our granddaughter on Skype when she comes out of hospital, but can’t stop smiling! :))))

Thank you all very much!
I like "meme" Michaella . . . was there a particular reason why you called your grandmas that??

Why "heirbell" Grandma-ge?

17 Apr, 2011

Its a long story Sheila, one day our neighbours little boy thought he was being very clever & rude (swearing!) and came out with heirbell in his rage!! We all laughed and it has stuck, so we all use this peculiar name now!! Lol.

Love that!!! I used to call my Gran NanNan when I was little, but I remember being a teenager and thinking I couldn't call her that any more so I started calling her Gran. Nobody ever commented on the change, I expect they didn't want to embarrass me! I didn't see her often, perhaps nobody noticed!

Congrats on the new arrival and being a Grandma for the first time, exciting isn't it? I have two grandaughters, they call me Grandma Pat and they call their other Grandma, Grandma Rosie. When my daughter was little she called my mother 'Gammy', lol now she's 17 its reverted to Grandma.

Wonderful news Sheila! Congrats to you and all your family....I love the name too, and what a beautiful Mum and handsome Dad she has. I've always been Nanny...up to last year...now Nan, that's more cool!....Lol Ian is Kuckoo....He used to call Chloe , Chloe Kuckaburra, and when she began talking it was Kuckoo to him! Aren't we all nuts!....:o)

Thank you very much, Janey - thanks for the compliments. I love nutty people!! It's funny the names that come from nowhere . . . I used to call my youngest 'chocolate sausage horror'!!

Nan is nice, but too close to 'Nonna' for me . . . maybe I'll be Gram or Grammy(?), or wait to see what Chiara calls me!

Congratulations Sheila, isn't it the best feeling, being a Grandparent? Nothing quite like it.I love your grandaughters name,so .girly..if you know what I mean..
We are just Grandma and Grandad, but we like it..maybe our Thomas will choose something different for us,when he can talk..Lol.Looking forward to seeing a pic of Chiara..:o))

Congratulations! I opted for the Welsh version -'Nanna' with the grandmother on the other side being 'Nanny.' My Dad preferred to be called Grandpa by my daughters, but the first-born couldn't handle all that so chose to double up on the 'pa' section, calling him Papa (pronounced pah-pah) for the remainder of his years. It always seemed a little 'special' and different. I wonder what your new grand-daughter will come up with? ;o)

18 Apr, 2011

Nariz, my children used to call my dad, Papa, It was really sweet.
