October

October is one of my favourite months. The reds and golds are beautiful especially in sun against a blue sky.

Autumn flowers are nice too. Asters, Schizostylis, Anaphalis triplinervis are all in flower in my garden.

Berries also give colour, at least until the blackbirds eat them.

Jobs for the month include:
• Planting Ilex ‘JC Van Tol’. This is a self-fertile holly ideal for my garden as I don’t have space for a male and female plant.
• Moved a climbing rose ‘Aloha’. I love this rose but I planted it in the wrong place. I wanted to move it to an area which had previously had a rose. I saw a tip in a magazine from a gardener who prevented rose sickness by planting roses into cardboard boxes before putting them into position in the border. I am trying this out.
• Sowed seeds of Nigella ‘Curiosity’ and Eschscholtzia californica ‘Purple Gleam’. A bit late really but the weather was on my side so they have germinated.
• Replaced broken fence panel. I can now sort out the planting in this area.

Acer Palmatum ‘Suminagashi’ and Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’

Geranium ‘Rozanne’

Hydrangea quercifolia

What beautiful photos! It's nice to see my favourite geranium in your garden!

All the leaves have fallen off my Cornus now, after the gales on Friday/Saturday. Mind you - you're talking about October, aren't you!

Please let us know if the cardboard box works. :-)

Thanks for your kind comments. I'm a bit late with this blog, both the cornus and the acer are now leafless. Rozanne is still flowering.

Great photos. I like your geranium, and the acer and cornus look nice together. I like the autumn aswell. It's not as garish as the summer.
