it would be nice if it were cliffo, but i think it is rowan now.
On question - do these look like rowan 'seedling
They are grey and felty. the flower is similar to a small lamium.
On question - What is it please?
I have one planted in the front garden for 2 yrs now and it used to be in a pot in the back near to where this pot is. so perhaps thats how they got there. I hope they are rowan as I know exactly where i want to plant them.

this is a scale insect infestation. You can spray with a systemic insecticide to kill them. or if it is only a few leaves squish them. This looks quite bad so I'd go for the insecticide. It is a sap sucking critter. They excrete a sugary waste that then provides food for the sooty mould. this is what makes them look black.
hope this helps.

it is natures way of clearing away the dead and dieing. can you imagine what it would be like if there was no decay to get rid of it all. I actually admire the biology of it really.

and dont forget to have a very lose look at the roots as they burrow into them. It does look like typical vine weevil damage though. but keep an eye on the others just in case. I'd do as amblealice suggests. :o)

the most likely culprit i would think will be caterpillars but i have known snails to slither up his sort of plant and have a munch now and again.
On question - what pest makes holes in leaves ...
no but it was a variety that only takes old/diseased plants anyway. the rhs advice was to plant resistant, healthy trees and remove as much dead material as poss. thankfully not had any more casualties for 4 yrs now.
apparently there are several different species, some more rampant than others.

there are different varieties 'alba' is white, the subspecies cretensis is a dwarf variant and there are others. most are frost hardy. they are vigorous rhizomatous and beardless. according to my book beardless ones dont mind being buried though this one prefers to be on the surface and is evergreen.

if you can identify which adult it is and when they lay you should be able to take action then before they lay their eggs.
