Trying - oh so trying!

Off work as both girls on half term and I am determined to try and get an area of the garden sorted. A few photos to show what the challenge is.

This area has several dead shrubs, finished off by Honey Fungus. The demise of two 50yr old Silver birch hearlded the beginning of the end. Amongst the dead are a deep purple double lilac, a Laurel, Ribes and a Holly.

The first task was to get the Ribes out and the ivy that is creeping every where.

And of course my friend came down for a look for grubs etc.

I lifted a few plants to avoid trampling them and during the hail showers I potted them up in the greenhouse. Another dusky pink hellebore and a Doroconium that I thought I had lost. The Doroconium has broken up into at least 4 lumps so thats good.

Boy were they showers? The worst lasted for 40 mins and left everything looking rather familiar :o(

Back out into the sun I tackled the ivy and brambles. The Yew got a slight trim too to let a little more light into this border. By 3pm it was too cold and time to sort out tea.

The area is on the southern edge [sounds grand but it isnt] and is about 10ft long by 15ft and ranges in depth, 5ft at its narrowest and faces north. The wall although 4ft tall will block a lot of the sun at this time of year.

I will keep trying to get this area sorted, though more sleet & snow forecast for tomorrow. The couch grass is going to be another trying aspect of this border but I am sure given time I will overcome!

Any volunteers?

I love challenges, would love to come and help you to get stuck in to all
that hard graft. Its a long way to Yorkshire from where I live.
Sorry, sbg.

You have certainly made good progress! I expect you didn't feel the cold very much with all that hard work!

We haven't seen any snow or sleet here today but we did have a little rain about 4 pm.

You've got your work cut out there, perhaps we all should hire a coach and pick up volunteers to come and help. What are you planning to grow there? If it were me I'd just use annuals so that each year I could dig out any remaining roots and the soil is free of nasties.

hi sbg working hard there, lots to keep you busy ..couch grass.i hate the stuff ..maybe you will get a few decent days before you go back to work

thanks for the words of encouragement. :o)
i am thinking of just a heavy mulch for this year and use glycophosphate as and when. unfortunatelyy lots of bluebells and other assorted bulbs in there too. love a challenge.

It's very satisfying to see progress, isn't it. I hope the weather is kind to you and lets you get it cleared. We had a short hail shower today - then chilly rain. No gardening today! Just a wet walk with Henry. :-((

annuals are a good idea Heron, but there are still some shrubs alive in there. There is also a lovely mature native ivy that flowers and fruits and if i can get it pruned back to a managable size it should be easier to keep it in control.

16 Feb, 2010

It sounds quite a task but you seem to have got it organised and under controll. Good luck :o)

17 Feb, 2010

its raining this morning so I m stuck in doors contemplating doing some paper work :o(

It is going to be a long job though. And i need to tidy up the other borders as i go too.

I hope we get a nice spring this year. We need it now. It has snowed here again . We had a few cms this morning - it wasn't forecast either :o(( Fortunately it is starting to melt now. I hope you don't get any in Yorkshire. I preffer rain even though it is miserable.

It`s good to be able to get out even if it`s only for a short time Sea, raining again here so it will only be a trip around filling up the bird feeders. I haven`t even managed to prune my roses yet,I`m right fed up with all the wet weather..............

Your doing ok and getting there, hope the weather soon gets better, nice and sunny here but very cold.

Good work Seaburn. I would imagine you've been wanting to get stuck into this section for a while - I'm glad you've managed to find time to make a start.

Hi SBG,
Its satisfying when you can finally get outside and make some progress with the wilder parts of the garden.

Have you got the Spanish bluebells? They are a real nuisance and seed themselves everywhere. When we moved here 9 years ago, i kept a few clumps of the bluebells, not realising how the seed themselves.

I sympathise with you re the couch grass - still its easier to clear when the shrubs and perennials are out of the way.

I look forward to a blog later in the year to see progress!

I have both the spanish and the english ones. I have a pink and white one too and they are much more like the native ones.

The couch grass is a real pain and I cant get a good digging action due to all the roots from the dead and living trees & shrubs. Its a real mess. But I will keep going at it. I have bindweed in another part of the garden. otherwise its pretty clear of pernicious weeds.

I have done an update blog as I got outside today :o)

20 Feb, 2010

Dont you just hate bind weed and couch grass - I have both too Seaburn.

20 Feb, 2010

me too - I am ashamed to say I do use weedkiller on them from time to time when I cant dig them out. I paint the leaves with a mixture of weedkiller and wallpaper paste
