untidy greenhouse

Well it is that time of year when the greenhouse has done its job and it needs sorting out. It has been used to ‘dump’ all sorts of things in it. Straw/hay for the rabbits and sawdust for their cages too have found a resting place. What else do you do with the empty compost bags except put them aside for use later?

The tomatoes and peppers have all but finished so I removed what was left and took them into the house to ripen. Found a god sized cucumber that ended up as a treat for the bunnies as it had gone a little too far.

Then the removal of the weeds that have taken advantage of me not venturing into the greenhouse for 4 weeks or so. Dug out and composted in most cases. The satisfaction of freshly dug and [apparently] weed free soil.
There were some nice bistorts and that annoying little yellow oxalis as well as small sneaky nettle that caught me unawares.

It didnt take too long but I tried to be thorough but there were a lot of oxalis seed pods going off pop. Ah well more to do as the seasons progress. But for the moment it looks really good.

Then I started sorting out all the plant pots. I try to have them stacked nice and neatly in their various sizes. I find it makes chosing the right pot a quicker and easier task, but it rarely stays tidy for long. I have to sweep under the staging too.

After several hours I had to call it a day, as my youngest daughter wanted my help with the tidying of her bedroom. So as I turned my back on the tidy part I was left to face the remaining half.

Oh well perhaps tomorrow? I will have to find the power washer and give the glass a good cleaning too. I have noticed lots of moss growing in the gaps between the glass and the frames. Hopefully hubby will do that for me after I have sealed the electricity sockets with plastic to avoid water getting in. Safety first!

It looks like quite a large greenhouse. Will you be overwintering things in it ?

7 Nov, 2009

I have quite a few plants being overwintered in mine plus quite a few cuttings i took that are all doing well, so my greenhouse is still very much in use.

7 Nov, 2009

yes it will be, in fact is already in use down the clered side. it is 20x8 [two 10x8 fastened back to back so i have doors at both ends. one end opens next to the fruit cage. the path has the cold frame sitting on it at the mo.

When it was raining last sunday i lifted my pelargoniums and potted them up and took lots of cuttings. I will also be putting my recently identified Fuchsia 'swingtime' in there along with the smaller fuchsias to help them come on ready for next year]

I plan to take more divisions/cuttings as i go round tidying up. then of course there are all the new things that i intend to buy and not have their homes ready :o)

It will drive my husband mad :o) [well he keeps bringing into te house his bikes as he works on them, so he cant really complain]

My you do have a brilliant big greenhouse, mine is only a baby to yours as its only 6-4, but i do have a plastic greenhouse aswell and that as a fleece on as well as the plastic cover, so it does get quite warm in there believe it or not, and i can still winter some things in it, there again i'm on my own so find my little greenhouse does me.

Brill blog SBG, I was just wondering how to heat my plastic poly tunnel (10' X 6' 6") over the winter?

7 Nov, 2009

good work sea.. maybe you should have suggested your daughter helped you with the greenhouse them do her bedroom,, funny how we drop everything for them but not the other way round isnt it :o))

7 Nov, 2009

Lovely blog SBG,as yet I dont have a greenhouse but when we've moved I hope to get one not quite as big as yours.:0)

7 Nov, 2009

i would love one to stripes, but done think it will happen , :o(

7 Nov, 2009

she does help but i am always worried in case she trips and goes through the glass. she was good at wshing all the plant pots until her hands got too cold.

ian I use an old calor gas heater to take the chill off and keep it frost free. i find i have several settings that i can use. one cylinder lasts at least all winter and if it is mild it will go into spring too.

any really tender cuttings go in a heated propagator overnight. its a bit of a faff to take them out of the propagators every morning and back again at night. but it seems such a waste to heat all the greenhouse.

7 Nov, 2009

just looked sea,, you have lovely girls there ;o)

7 Nov, 2009

yes the car is as stunning. it is a P4 rover 80 smoke grey, 2.25 litre petrol engine. first registered in1960 43000 miles on the clock and we are the second registered keepers. both girls came home from the maternity ward in it. sad i know its details but you have to take some interest in what hubby loves. :o)
when i was expecting elizabeth we went touring devon in it. I was about 3 weeks away from my due date and i asked hubby what would happen if i went into labour . he said dont worry I have a blanket in the boot. I said thats sweet at least i'll be comfy on the back seat. his response. 'you have to be joking, its so i dont get grass stains on my knees helping you deliver her, there's no way you are messing the leather up' hows that for love!

7 Nov, 2009

did you go any where good? [as if you'd go some where poor, but you know what i mean. did it live up to expectations?]

9 Nov, 2009

I went to Turkey Seaburn , read three books, lay around the beach , wandered up and down beach bars drinking coffee and coke during day people watching then wandered about at night, eating, drinking beer n raki , went to Kos as well whilst I was there it was absolutely splendid

10 Nov, 2009

Sounds ab fab to me Mac! Good for you!! That raki made me fall over! ;o)

10 Nov, 2009

You to Fluff !!!!! we must be allergic

10 Nov, 2009

whats raki then some thing alcofrollic? :o)
glad you had a good time mac. we need to let our hair down from time to time.

10 Nov, 2009

its a clear liquid that the turks, certainly the ones I was with half fill a glass with raki then top it up with water it goes a sort of cloudy /milky colour and has a taste not unlike a sort of pernod . oh it has a fair old kick, but does not dull down the pain of watching Rangers getting well beat in Europe whilst sitting in a turkish bar.

11 Nov, 2009

oh an aniseed based drink. I remember helping my self to some absinthe similar stuff. almost put me off booze for life [i think i was 4 yrs old but i remember it clearly] the smell was ok but the taste.......

i wont comment on the footie but condolencses non the less :o)

11 Nov, 2009

Ugghh, aniseed flavoured alcohol ...... i too had an extremely bad experience with this when i was younger Seaburngirl.
Just thinking about it makes me feel ill !

11 Nov, 2009

I think it used to be the dregs left when they trod grapes for wine...now it's Turkey's national drink!
When in Crete we were served it neat in tiny tankard shaped glasses & you were required to down it in one...hence the falling down bit!!!

11 Nov, 2009

At some point during the evening we were drinking it with some sort of leafy green vegetable in it , I wasnt sure if this was traditional but the Turks were doing it so I just joined in , I think it was parsley .. why ? I have no idea !

12 Nov, 2009

was it part of your 5 a day :o)
need vitamins from somewhere!
