The veg cage update

As the weather is so duff I thought I’d do a veg cage update. Last summer hubby converted the fruit cage, which had seen much better days, to a veg cage for us.

After it had been dug and weeded I planted early sprouting broccoli, onion sets, leeks and early cabbages.

I have just planted shallots in a spare place in front of the leeks. Sowed broad beans in pots in the greenhouse too.

I have also been using it for a holding area for propagating plants and growing some bulbs like daffs.

They are going to have to be moved out so I can sow the parsnips.

The shelving has made a big difference to the number of plants I can store.

So far so good. I just wish the weather would perk up abit so I can get to grips with the rest of the garden.

Same weather here..everything is sodden. I consoled myself by getting out the propagator and sowing some ricinus seed. Theres something special about that first pack of seed isnt there? :)

Is that a reminder to sow Ricinus seeds Karen ,thanks I'll dig out my packet and get on with it Lol ...

Its a good idea to protect your plants in the veg cage Sbg It saves the birds from rooting about in pots looking for grubs ....

Hi Amy! I've never grown Ricinus before! But as they need a long season and warmth, I thought I'd try to get them started early and bring them on in the warmer greenhouse so that when June gets here they are a decent size. Tbh I dont have that much hope, but we grew them at Glamis Castle and they were a great success in the long border there. And as I am going for a Red themed patio this year, I thought they would look stunning there against my pale walls and in that south facing position they have a chance. I'm sure you will have a much better success with yours...whenever you sow them!

The shelf is a great idea as is the veg cage. No pussy cats to bother your veg in there. I read about growing seeds by wrapping them in wet kitchen paper. I thought I would give it a go. I got one very sturdy looking seedling trying to produce its third leaf so took it into the study to take a pic. Somebody phoned and without thinking I swept the poor thing off the desk. I put it back in the fridge to get over its fright but I dk if it will survive. I dk what it was as I thought I would remember but nothing comes to mind.

Lol Scotsgran - just the sort of daft thing I do too...

The shelves were for the troughs with strawberries so the hang down and are easier to pick.
the cage keeps the bigger birds out and the dratted squirrels so there is no rummaging in the pots. But mice /voles can still get in and so far touch wood they haven't been a problem.

I love Ricinus but rarely grow it, not sure why I don't actually.

Looking week organised SBG...I have echium seedling popping up.. So hard not to sow them all now!! Trying to wait another week before I get the tomatoes in...

I know that feeling Sandra! I asked my neighbour when he sows his toms and he said 'should be end of Feb, but I'll probably put them in a week earlier'...we are all the same! ;)

I don't put my tom seeds in until mid march.

We've got leeks just showing in pots in the conservatory.
Good idea about the shelves in your netted area.
