Well I had to go buying plants: didnt I?

After all the turf lifting and digging of the last few weeks I had to buy plants to go in the new beds.

Those of you near to me in East/North Yorkshire know of Reighton. It is becoming well known for the commonplace and less commonplace plants. All at a reasonable price. Best bit; my eldest brother was along with me for the trip [another keen gardener too]

Let me give you a hint of its charm; imagine a field laid out with trays and trays of 9cm pots with young and in some cases old plants all for 60p a pot. lupins, salvias, coreopsis, penstemons, aquilegia, lythrum, monarda, foxgloves, primulas, heucheras, delphiniums, phlox, lobelia …….etc etc

Turning 180 degrees:

A typical example, though the heuchera are out of shot!:

In some aisles there are bigger pots possible 1/2 lt but could be a litre size, [I really must check my measurements!] for £1.60. Again with a good selection of plants.

Photo taken back at home on the pond wall[Notice the wedding ring :o))]

The next field along a similar lay out with shrubs, though I didnt go looking in those today. On the way back to the checkout there are bays of larger 2lt pots containing epimedium, hemerocallis, asters, pulmonaria etc and the typical price for these was £3.

Did I mention the large greenhouses of fuschia, surfinia, diascia, osteospermum and other basket plants? No? Well they range from 80p each to about £1 each though multibuy options are there also.

So what did I buy? Well I think I picked up 37 plants which came to a grand total of £35. Sadly or perhaps fortunately they dont do mail order :o)

Then on the way back we stopped at another 2 gc and I picked up another 16 plants for £21. Not such good bargains but cheaper than some of the national gc ‘chains’.

Geum Queen of Orange and Lobelia Fan scarlet

All I need now is some rain over night to soften the ground then I can get planting.

One happy bunny who probably wont buy another plant this year.

Whoo hoo! SBG, that's a great place for a visit! I love those sort of nurseries, the ones where you can have a good 'ol plunder around and find something special! And the prices are phenomenal, how do they do it?! :0) Your plant choices are lovely too, good days work!

Well done Sbg, didnt you have fun. Lucky you having a place like that so near. Mind you they must sell a lot more because they are cheaper. You are going to have such fun now, finding homes for them all

Glad you had a great day Seaburn girl..I will be there again in a couple of weeks. Last year I bought a couple of Sorbaria Sorbifolia Sem.(false spirea)from there. They are wonderful little plants ,will put a photo on in case you haven't seen one before. They were £3.50 each at Reighton, but when I looked on line for them the cheapest was £7. 50 !

That looks a fab place SBG!!!...I love nurseries like that....pity it wasn't nearer....our GC's are all so boring and predictable in their choice of plants. I have to rely on a friend to tip me the wink when they get anything half decent....
Good to see you ring back in its rightful place :-))

the beauty of this place is it is family run, they raise a lot them selves and the plants are potted up and put out side to take their chances in many cases. they lost most of the broad leafed penstemons and many shrubs too apparently. [dodnt we all!]

The ones that have overwintered have a few weeds in with them but once the roots have been coaxed out of their spiral and they are given room to spread they are good plants.

The wedding ring isn't new but I lost it last week when gardening and didnt get it back until sunday when a mate came round with his metal detector. One very happy bunny I can tell you.

Done a little planting today but until I have ripped out some lamium [know what spritz means now!] I have to keep them on the back path.
