Heuchera - popularity poll!

Since I’ve become a member of this site – I have noticed that my stock of Heucheras/Heucherellas/Tiarellas are ever increasing. It doesn’t matter which GC/Nursery you go to – they are either shouting at you to pick them up or they intentionally fall into your trolley!

My motto(s) seems to be becoming……

‘IF YOU CAN’T FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR…..A HEUCHERA WON’T GO WRONG’

……..or……..

’I’LL JUST TAKE ONE OF THOSE WHILE I’M HERE’

……..or…….

‘I COULD SQUEEZE THAT ONE IN’

…….or…….

JUST ONE MORE

Who to blame? I could not possibly begin to lay any sort of blame at anybody in particular’s garden gate – after all, I’m sure I should be old enough to be trusted to go through those doors and practice a little bit of self restraint and avoid the voices in my head that scream any of the above and in any order :))

I have to say though that there has been one particular Heuchera that has never failed to look good and has done well in the garden since it charmed it’s way into my garden….

Ladies and gentlemen may I present………

HEUCHERA MARMALADE

Heuchera Marmalade – gets my vote for No.1 Heuchera for year round performance and has so far been ‘untouched’ by the unmentionables (hope I haven’t jinxed it now!) Vine Weevil grubs.

Do you have a favourite? Are you always tempted? Do you think between us we could manage a top 10 Heuchera/Heucheralla/Tiarella chart?
If you would like me to add a picture of your favourite let me know which picture it is on your garden page and with your permission I will add it to the blog and we can have a top 10 countdown – minus the Top of the Pops theme tune :))

Of course, if you don’t have a heuchera or heucherella YET you might be interested in the results…..

Please join in and thanks for reading :)

Oh, by the way – I just bought my first Tiarella yesterday!

JOINT FIRST PLACE WINNERS…..

Heuchera Blackberry Jam – picture courtest of Cinderella

Thank you all once again for joining in. I hope you enjoyed discussing these fabulous plants!!

I have it as well and it's a good one - gets my vote. I also like Blackberry Jam - sorry no photo.
Like you, since joining GoY, I have increased my stock to 6 heucheras, 1 heucherella and 1 tiarellas - and they're all doing well, which must be a first for this garden!

" .... practice a little self restraint....." ?? Nah! GCs and self restraint do not go together! Especially when confronted with Heucheras. I'm a new Heuchera fan - only discovered them recently, but I bought the last remaining three (Mahogany, Melting Fire and Silver Scrolls) in the GC when I visited Britain by ferry last Christmas and I'm on the hunt for more .... and more .... and maybe a few more .... and just one or two more ...... ;o)

What a great blog ! :D
I've got 3 Heucheras and one Heucherella and one Tiarella. My favourite ones are the variegated ones.
However, I've lost the labels, so I don't think their photos would be any good for your top ten list :o(

marmalade is also a favourite of mine as are crimson curls and licorice.
I bought 6 new ones at gardening scotland last week and now have about 15 different varieties so yes I would say I was an addict LOL
oh and lime pie in fact them all really
feel free to use any of my photos by the way :-)

My sweet tea was eaten by the nasties but have tapestry in the ' special care unit' where its responding well to treatment...

One I have but lost its name in the repotting has deep red leaves with bright shocking pink flecks

Must admit I do like your marmalade, shame there isn' one called buttered toast as we could have had breakfast.....

11 Jun, 2012

I love my Lime Rickey for brightening up a shady corner. But I have to admit I've been eyeing up Marmalade on several people's photos recently and it's now top of my shopping list... :P

I dug this site out from a year or so back, lots of tips and Heuchera news.

I have 5 Heucheras, my favourite is Berry Smoothie :)

11 Jun, 2012

Blackberry Jam for me, also because it was sent to me by Karensusan.

11 Jun, 2012

The one with flourescent pink spots is midnight rose, and another rescued one a bit like tapestry but lighter is Electra

I think that I like them ALL........?.

11 Jun, 2012

I bought my only Tiarella a month ago after seeing Karensusan's clump and with her encouragement. It was a small plant in a 9cm pot but it has already doubled in size and has flowered on and on. Thanks, Karen, I've found something which likes my garden!

11 Jun, 2012

I must have over twenty heucheras now (but then I do have quite a large garden). I think my favourite is 'Tiramisu' - there's nothing quite like it. But then I do like 'Obsidian' as well, and 'White Spires' looks good in a restrained way and .... I give up, they're all good

11 Jun, 2012

I now have five different ones...but the only one which I can identify is Fire Chief! Don't think I've got any decent photos though...

12 Jun, 2012

If you look at the link I put in there Karen you may find the others just don't shop ....I have got £60 worth in the basket as I type.

12 Jun, 2012

Hahaha...dangerous waters, Pim!
Are you past the "b"s yet? ;)))

12 Jun, 2012

Thing is when you choose one you need another to go with it or contrast against it...Not got on to the heucherella's yet and I know there is one called "Brass Lantern" in there that I want. :/

12 Jun, 2012

I know exactly what you mean, Pim...
Luckily for me, they don't ship abroad!!! :))

Think two of mine might be from that French chap... which would make sense...

12 Jun, 2012

Seems like there is far too big a choice for most of us to have an absolute favourite. The rain here the last few days has brought most of the heucheras to life - thank goodness, some of them were just looking yuk!!
I'll leave this open for a couple of days and get compiling the chart.
Thanks to you all who have participated so far - hopefully more will join in.

PIMPERNEL.......happy shopping :))

12 Jun, 2012

Have loads includind that one ... Green spice .. plum ... Sweet tea ... Ginger spice .... But lots more I want LOL ...

12 Jun, 2012

I only have 2 nameless ones from lidl in intensive care in pots as I hadn't planted them well....... If anyone has a spare plant or seeds if they can be grown from seed, that they would like to see re homed I would gladly pay postage x gorgeous useful plant, adore every variety I have seen so far on this site x I promise to plant any adoptees well xx

12 Jun, 2012

I have so many I can't count them any more ! Favourites are Marmalade, Blackberry Jam, Lime Ricky, Caramel, Berry Smoothie. and Sweet Tea, and Licorice.

12 Jun, 2012

Hmmm - I notice a trend there Cinderella. How long before they breed new ones called 'Sticky Toffee Pudding' or 'Milk Chocolate'?

12 Jun, 2012

While on this subject of which many of you are so knowleageable ..... what's the difference between Heucheras, Heucharellas and Tiarellas? As I said earlier, I'm a new fan of Heucheras, so I don't yet know very much about these lovely plants. Can't believe I've missed them all these years!

13 Jun, 2012

I think that there is one called Tiramisu.......

13 Jun, 2012

I see that Andrew, all to do with food or meal times !! We all love our food don't we.

13 Jun, 2012

A heucherella is a hybrid of the Tiarella and Heuchera. It has a more densely packed flower stem.

13 Jun, 2012

Thanks Pimpernel! Loads more for me to learn about them yet!

13 Jun, 2012

You are welcome Nariz...

I just keep looking and finding more all the time. I remember about 10 years ago when it seemed there was a dark one and a dull green one both were just sold as Coral plants and that was you lot.!!

The link I included above is good for browsing..they update with new plants quite often.

13 Jun, 2012

You are very, very naughty, Pim...
Trying to get everyone hooked...lol! ;D

13 Jun, 2012

Lol..well I could find a French site if you haven't already :D

13 Jun, 2012

Lol! Already found some...
...and they've got some different ones...!

Still no good though...need a mobile phone to make a purchase! :))

13 Jun, 2012

How do you know if it's a Hybrid? My fav at the minute is called Peach Melba....such lovely names...and does a Tiarella look the same?Going Gardeners World sunday I remember a lovely Heuchera stall there last year, have 5 need MORE!!!

13 Jun, 2012

I've found the names of my Heucheras now, so if you want one, my fav is Green Spice. I put a photo on this morning :o)

13 Jun, 2012

I'm keeping you all in suspenders for the charts boys and girls. Will tote up and post results at weekend :)

13 Jun, 2012

Running total so far folks is:
Green Spice (3), Marmalade (3), and Blackberry Jam (3)
Closely followed with 2 votes each are Lime Rickey, Sweat Tea and Licorice.
No clear winner so joint first place (at the moment) goes to Green Spice Marmalade and Blackberry Jam.
The following each received 1 mention from their devoted growers:
Peach Melba, Caramel, Berry Smoothie, Plum Pudding, Ginger Spice, Fire Chief, Tiramisu, Obsidian, White Spires, Midnight Rose, Electra, Berry Smothie, Crimson Curls, Mahongany, Melting Fire and Silver Scrolls.

I would also like to give a mention to all those Heucheras who have lost their labels or been passed down without name - YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!

15 Jun, 2012

Is blackberry jam silvery with dark veins, the one I saw for sale wasn't exciting but marmalade was lovely, I resisted as I was at an art festival and was 'spent out'.......

15 Jun, 2012

I'm not sure. There are a few with silvery ones with darker veins Pamg....I have pm'd Cinderella in the hope that I can add a picture of hers to the blog. Awaiting reply. There is a picture on her garden page if you want to have a look. Silver Scrolls and Jade Gloss also have silver leaves (that I know of) there will of course be countless others :))))
There will be another opportunity to buy no doubt :)))

15 Jun, 2012

It seemed expensive at £6.99.....and I was on a small coach

15 Jun, 2012

£6.99 is quite reasonable I think so long as a decent size. Up here a decent sized plant in GC is around £8.99.
If you don't have by next year Pam - I will probably need to split this and can get you a bit from it

15 Jun, 2012

Pictures of the winners now included above. Cinderella sorry for the quality your picture has turned out - don't know what I have managed to do wrong!

17 Jun, 2012

Thats a shame isnt it. Never mind, nice to know the order of popularity

17 Jun, 2012

Thankyou Scottish, thats very kind. My poorly tapestry is now two and looking much better and electra is almost ready to leave hospital.....as long as the weather doesn't take another turn for the worst!

17 Jun, 2012

Hi, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Vicky1 is a GOY member and owns the National Collection of Heucheras, Heucherellas and Tiarellas! Her Nursery website is Plantagogo which gives loads of info and they consistently take gold at all the shows including Chelsea. She has lovely blogs on here showing how to use and increase heucheras. So I blame Vicky1 for my heuchera/heucherella addiction. I've bought lots of lovelies from there online. They may ship to France too Karen? worth a look:-)
