what jumped in to my trolley at SRGC Dunblane Early Bulb event

I did not admit to buying the plant in photos just added to the end of the blog.
I’m getting better at budgeting for plants I want and no others but sigh! what does one do when presented with goodies like these.

Iris histrioides ‘Finola’ is a lovely iris. Sorry I did not manage to capture a photo of the flower before they died back but it can be seen on the internet by googling the name. Here is a typical description from the net -- Delightful little Iris, a real gem. Pure white throughout except for a narrow yellow mark on the falls which is surrounded by a dappling of pale blue dots.

To help fill the tables I took along a couple of pots of iris which I grew in the hope they might perform for the display area. As usual there was one or two missing from one side of the pot but the ones which did grow were very nice on the day. The colour is not as dark in the photo as in the flesh but Pcw recently showed a lovely true representative photo of these.

I forgot to swap the home made label (old metal venetian blind slats cut up into 8" lengths) for something more suitable.

It was a great day out and I am looking forward to the SRGC Stirling Show which will be held in the Kincardine Community Centre on 25th March from 12 noon. I did not mention the next plant because I thought it was just a pot of sisyrinchium seedlings. I am delighted to find it is Olsynium douglasii (it used to be Sisyrinchium douglasii) and it is the most gorgeous deep purple

Beauties. I fear that Olsinium would have jumped into my trolley too...have read that it can be tricky to grow -what do you think?

Lovely choices .. have you decided on places for them all ?

That's what I will say when I come back laden with plants- they just jumped into my trolley! Ha, Ha... Hoping to go shopping end of April to the Dingle plant nursery near Welshpool for a lovely wisteria I am planning to train up the front of my house (the metal wires are all in place) and have got a long shopping list.... I love your irises, if you look on my pictures I planted a pot up with lots of iris reticulata and the bright blue effect is amazing!

I hope not Steragram. I did not buy it from this nursery but they seem to think it is hardy. Their nursery is west of us so fingers crossed our weather is not too different from theirs.

When I spotted it I thought it was an acis. I have an autumn flowering one and it is hardy.
TT I might keep the iris in pots. There are 12 of each JS Djit and Finola so they would look good in a bigger pot. I think the rest are safe enough outside and I have plenty of spaces where they will disappear before coming up again next year. Only the Colchicum holds on to its leaves because it flowers first then the leaves come later.
lol Amsterdam folk are the same the world over. There is nothing nicer than a wall covered in Wisteria flowers. You are very well organised in having the frame up already. I have looked at your iris and they are wonderful. I have planted some iris seeds so I hope to extend my little collection of dwarf iris. I was lucky enough to get bulbils of I. Katharine Hodgkin. I have some flowering which missed the show on the 18th February and they will probably be over by the 25th of March for the Edinburgh Show.

That must be so difficult growing the dwarf iris from seed?
How long does it take for them to form a bulb and subsequently flower?

I have the purple O. douglasii and it has been going strong for 15 years. it is very slow growing and I moved it last year so I think I can see it starting to show.

Beauties. Especially the Iris Reticulata Eye Catcher......there were lots of these at RHS WIsley when we visited a couple of weeks ago!

Amsterdam I am hoping maybe one to two years but if you want more information then there is a down to earth article on propagating from seed on this link
http://www.telp.com/irises/seed.htm
They hope you will get maybe three leaves the first year after a winter outdoors.
Nobody seemed to be selling the purple ones Sbg but I have checked and there is seed listed in the catalogue so I will see if I can get some at the next show. It is very attractive. It seems to be twice the height of the white one but that might have something to do with growing conditions.
Paul it only became commercially available in 2016 so it is good to hear it is being grown where members of the public can see it. It is one of the new hybrids bred by a Canadian iris breeder Alan McMurtrie. The nurserymen/women seem to be of the opinion that it is the best bred hybrid since Katherine Hodgkin in England in the 1960's by EB Anderson. It just goes to show how dedicated to perfection the breeders are when they choose to make it their life's work. It must be like winning the lottery when they find they have something very special.

Thank you Diane but I let you down this time because I took no photos on the day. If you go on to the SRGC site you will see lovely pics of what was happening.

Sgb I bought what I thought were seedlings of sysyrinchium from the members table. Turns out it is Olsynium douglasii - the purple one. I will post a photo as soon as the flower opens up.

I have now added the photos of the Olsynium douglasii. It is a superb shade of purple.

it is isn't it. I haven't noticed mine at the moment. I hope I haven't lost it.

I would think there is plenty of time for it to come yet. Fingers crossed it will appear soon. I managed to get a photo of the open flower today which I have posted above.
