Suntrap in August

A day out at the place granny goes to enjoy some companionship with like minded people was top of the list of must do trips for our daring Dora the Explorer and her little brother, when my daughter and her two little ones came to visit.

This is Suntrap

Plenty of parking.

Plenty to see even before we get out of the car. There is an Alpine scree bed.

The pond and all the beautiful ferns round about,

In to the plant sales area and what is this. It looks like the computer is on all the time.

WOW!! Its an explosion Granny. 4 year old granddaughter alias Dora

2 year old grandson much more interested in the wheels.

That is beautiful. Do you grow strawberries?

can we explore there?

Its a long tunnel and smells lovely

Will we do it again

The flowers are so pretty

I’ve found a dog

Its a shepherd and a little boy with a lamb.

Mummy says “Don’t touch. The flowers are prickly”

We had taken along a picnic which was enjoyed by all and many more photos were taken before we decided it was time to go home. It was a great visit and plenty to do in the four hours we were there. The children ran themselves and grandpa ragged and were keen to see how vegetables grow in the earth. My granddaughter has been growing her own veg and was very interested to see how other people do it. The highlight of her day regardless of how tired she was, was always going out to dig potatoes every day which we needed at dinner time.

Suntrap is under threat of closure. You can read all about it at www.sos2010.btck.co.uk They have just posted an advert for volunteers gardeners, so if anyone fancies a look at what is on offer please apply to find out more. There are plans to arrange coffee and cake sessions to explain what is required and what is offered in return for your help.

Hope it all works out, Scotsgran. We would volunteer for a few workshifts if it wasn't so far away.

Thank you Bb. I do not know what has happened here but I have no pictures on here at all. It is strange. We will just have to wait and see what the Steering Group arrange with NTS. As far as we know we can continue to have our Gardening Club meetings at Suntrap but nothing else has been explained to us yet.

Thanks Yorkshire,
I go in on a Friday to help the gardeners and my gardening knowledge has come on leaps and bounds. I think what is so lovely in Suntrap is the feeling that you are always in a domestic sized garden rather than a grand house setting. George Boyd Anderson who laid it out and built his home here was a very innovative chap. The house is of historic interest because of the green solutions he worked so hard to introduce. Underfloor heating, solar panels and wind energy were in their infancy or maybe unheard of in domestic situations when he put them in to his home.

What a lovely place Scotsgran & blog too. I hope it manages to stay open for you all.

It has a lovely atmosphere which is a bit strained at the moment because of all the gardeners being made redundant. It is less than 10 days till the end of August and we still do not know what is happening on 1st September. Everybody is keeping mum.

What a beautiful garden, I so enjoyed looking at the photos and if I lived closer I would surely help.

Yes, me too, and I hope they get some more volunteers!

One of our visitors runs a website www.edinburghpastandpresent.com and he has put us in there with an appeal for more volunteers. He has a photographic exhibition in Edinburgh during the festival and he has offered to help in any way he can. Our Goy David is also keen to help so it may take a wee while for the organisers to get organised but we hope they can do the needful.

Sounds promising though....

We have to believe that where there is life there is hope Karen. If all the good wishes areturned in to commitment we should save Suntrap. I noticed there is hope for the Ski Slope in Edinburgh too, another of George Boyd Andersons gifts to the people. It would be devastating to lose that as the National Team train at Hiilend. It is a sign of the times I'm afraid.

What a fantastic place to go to. I hope they get all the people that they need as it will be a great loss.
You think with the lotto money it could be spent on places like these.

I do hope there is news soon to allow the Friends to proceed with their plans. There is no news and already September is here. There are so many rumours flying around and no solid news which is very frustrating. Reading the extracts from the letters being sent to both Oatridge and NTS it seems both have been dragging their feet. We were up north at Inverewe on Monday and met some Americans in the hotel where we were staying. They were heading off to Edinburgh so I told them about Suntrap being an NTS Garden and that it was well worth a visit. I lent them my NTS Handbook and the chap pointed out that Suntrap is not listed there. He also advised getting on to NTS and asking them to ensure it is in the 2011/12 book or we will lose out on vital publicity. I am hopeful of success but I think getting the publicity it needs is not a priority for anyone in these cash strapped days. I'm glad you have decided to volunteer David and hopefully we will meet on some of the days when we are both there. Nobody has been asked to do things they don't want to do and some like hoeing and others like me prefer potting on etc. There are plenty jobs to go round if we can get enough people to help.
