Hi sandz, welcome to GOY. like you i am a novice gardener and have the same issue with the fencing. i'm tackling the issue by creating flower beds along the fences and planting different types of clemitis. perhaps you could try this or maybe plant some in plant pots (although i'm not sure if they would be suited to plant pots).

I would like to suggest softening the edges of your great decking area with planting- perenial flower beds right up to it. The gravel does not achive anything try turning it into beds of flowering shrubs and climbers for all year colour, once done is low maintainance or put containers on it . The paving looks lovely how about a few containers to soften it. try visiting open gardens in your area and pinch a few ideas. The grass just needs feeding. I think you have put in a lovely hard land scape for you to build on. Enjoy it and good luck

What size is the garden and what is your aspect. Do you have a windy site? Do you have access to a DIY dude/husband (I'm thinking raised beds and pergolas and loads of gravel)? I suppose as well one has to ask if you have a budget for this. Answers to these questions may help start our creative processes.

Well pardon me for agreeing with you!! It certainly could do with a makeover. It's a pity your deck is in the corner with no room for planting, as it is against the fence - and it would be good to have a photo showing an overall view higher up, so its possible to see what your garden is surrounded by - it looks as if there's no planting next door either. How do you feel about tall shrubs or trees? That's probably the only way you're going to get some privacy on that deck. And climbers up the fence of course - and that lawn and gravel have to go....why is the lawn surrounded by chippings? Is there a reason for that? Another pic, as requested? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I do like to give good and appropriate advice, so need more info. Oh, and welcome to GoY;-)

Hi
Welcome to the site. It is really hard to try and visualise how your garden will look. I am the same - had loads of books and looked at all the pictures of other gardens on the site but could't relate any of them to my garden.
I haven't really got an answer, I'm afraid. It is really a case of trial and error. I keep digging more and more border and just buying more and more plants! I would love to have a bit more design but hopefully will
learn from my many mistakes and it will just evolve! Good Luck!
