hi guys got back from the lakes lastnight where we went just for two day break so i could go see holker hall and to keep baz happy thought we could visit the car museum to as they were in same area “newby bridge” a lovely area in the soth lakes,
anyway after nagging baz to get out of bed to set of early i was worn out lol, but off we set at 9am and was a lovely day so we decided to do holker hall when we got there as weather wasnt to be good the day after.
As we were going through grange-over-sands we noticed a car show so decided to stop of and check it out, lots of old cars for baz to view , a live country music band for me as i love country music,a hot cuppa and sandwich made by the local school to raise money, a real village affair,we stayed about a hour and a half then set off on our final run to newby bridge.
we finally arrived at holker where there was a horse trial on but didnt want to see that,,, get me to the hall and gardens, i was very excited, finally got baz to take me somewhere i liked haaha.
the hall was beautifull and still lived in by lord and lady cavandish, dating back to early 1600`s has been home to 3 families, preston, lowther and cavandish, the hall was largely rebuilt in 1870`s following a disasterous fire, with a new wing neo gothic style, couldnt take any pics sorry as not allowed, but beautifull and a real family home , not dark and dull like many victorian buildings, so bright and warm

the flower in bloom this week was the moutain camelia, stunning and a haven for bees

think there were three mountain magnolia`s in the gardens, one reaching about 14ft and beautifull,
the more formal gardens were lovely near the house, but not over formal like some, more lived in if you know what i mean

then we walked up the steps of neptunes waterfall, which the water flowed down channels either side of the steps down to the pond under ground, was amazing feature

at the top was of course neptune himself,, neptunes the one on the left

after that we walked around the lovely woodland and meadow areas where a 400 year old lime tree stands

and of course i had to hug a tree, there were so many huge, tall and wonderfull tree`s, was hard to decide which, so i went for this one, a beach i think, not sure now

also lots of shrubs , plants and seating area`s which i wanted all of them lol, baz even seemed interested asking what a certain shrub was, every time it was the same answer,,, its a rhodadendron baz,, ,,of right he would say,, short term memory hahah

ive so many pics i could go on all night posting them but wont bore you with them all, i would defernatly go there again, it was so calming and can see why the cavandish family have always lived there, its a slice of heaven on earth

11 Aug, 2010

You, me and Alan T from B&Q! What a great day out that would be, San, lol! You could be my partner in crime~how many years do you think we would get for taking a full sizes cardboard cutout out for a day trip or two, do you think, San? LOL!

11 Aug, 2010

Now I've lost it!

11 Aug, 2010

lol flori wouldnt that be so funny, they have taken allan down in our B&Q now, think cause summer sales are over now, so get down your store and ask for your life size allan NOW! hahaha

11 Aug, 2010

lol pip, they have allan tichmarsh life size cardboard advertising at our DIY stores here, flori and i love allan lol(garden presenter) you have probably heard of him

11 Aug, 2010

I have heard the name...

11 Aug, 2010

It's like having a lifesize Dr Harry at the pet shop, holding the heartworm tablets. "Pets are better with Supacoat!"

11 Aug, 2010

Oh Pip, didn't mean to baffle you, this is an old joke that San and I have shared a while back~you way tooooo young to appreciate the charms of Alan Titchmarsh, but San and I~we are at the perfect age to appreciate his finer points! LOL!

11 Aug, 2010

Well I'll just leave you old fogies to it then ;o)

11 Aug, 2010

11 Aug, 2010

We just have discerning good taste, young whippersnapper! Your turn will come, I have already read about your silver streak, Pip! ( I am assuming that was in regards to your hair, and not a naturists mad dash risking exposure, across the surburban parts of good old Oz???)

11 Aug, 2010

sounds alovely place to visit!

11 Aug, 2010

lol flori think pip is in bed now ;o))

Hi Sandra - I got here...I'm sure we 'did' visit Holker Hall a lot of years ago - thanks for the photos, it's a lovely place. Remind me please - is it National Trust?

11 Aug, 2010

thanx barbara, yes it is national trust ;o))

11 Aug, 2010

I thought it was...:-)

11 Aug, 2010

I certainly wouldn't do my silver streaking in the suburbs! The outback is much more conducive of that kind of thing!

11 Aug, 2010

beautiful pics Sandra and a lovely garden. I expect they have more than one gardener there to keep it like that. It seems that you and Baz had a great time ;-)

13 Aug, 2010

How wonderful Sandra......thanks for showing us your lovely photos.....

13 Aug, 2010

thanx richard im sure they have a few gardeners there, but what i liked it was a real family garden, not the type you dare not walk in certain places in fear of spoiling something, it was so relaxing and was the house to , we had a wonderfull time ;o))
hi maureen, glad you enjoyed them ;o))

14 Aug, 2010

Thanks Sandra you will have to tell us when you are having your next garden venture ;-)

14 Aug, 2010
