Oh am so jealous!!! what a picture, my neighbours on one side don't care about theirs at all apart from cutting the grass, i am fighting brambles coming through the fence at the moment, they are nice people and i dont want to fall out with them but oh i wish they would get rid of the brambles and weeds!!!

Valerian can be cut hard back when it has finished flowering. I think you could divide it, i haven't got it but it's a tough plant. I also think you could divide the Polyganum.

Hi Sadie - can't answer the whole question but ... my references say that Cape Fuchsia would usually be divided Mar/Apr (presumably when you put them back outside after over-wintering frost-free - they're quite frost-tender) and cut back to a couple of inches above ground level. A 'hardy' fuchsia I personally wouldn't divide, just take cuttings (or layerings) and cut it right back to just above ground level around mid-March or after the last of the serious frosts in your area and it'll come away again from the base. I cut fuchsias back in the spring because of the risk of frost damage if they're cut back in very late autumn as the flowers start to fall off - I often have flowers still on fuchias into December. You can take fuchsia cuttings now (as I am) and over-winter them or stick what you cut off in the spring into the ground and watch a few of them take root! Hope this helps ...

You can shade or clean off leaves up to Christmas.
Lift the cut ( not cutting it too short) and scerify with a rake removing moss and thatch.
On a mild day dress the lawn withn Autumn/Winter Fertilizer.
Hope this helps.

Check out www.jaquesamand.com, - a good bulb supplier. It's a bit early yet and they haven't listed their narcissus - try later in the month

I usually give my lawn a good raking and final mow before winter, dethatch if needed, deal with the weeds and fertilize. If you need to apply lime, now is the time. : )

Loads of us would like to live next door to folks who keep their garden as beautiful as that one ! Yours is equally nice, though, Sadie.
But, I'm curious. What about the neighbours the other side? Another masterpiece, or a virtual jungle ? LOL
Oh, and Sadie, I wonder about that photo of you on your home page.
Your hair seems rather straight... or does it curl up when you've been out in the rain?

Despite a lot of cats in my area I've never noticed it attracting them - that is something I've heard about the true valerian, Valeriana officinalis, instead. I like it, I've got it in very shallow soil in full sun and it flowers through most of the summer. I don't mind the deadheading. Seedlings are easily dug out and since I have a lot of self-seeders in my garden anyway I just do a bit of editing to keep what I want.

Thanks. They look very good together.

I'm with you, Grenville. Much as I like lots of laughs in my life, when I post a question on this lovely site what I hope to receive in the way of answers is good common sense based on gardening experience. Happily there are several members who can be totally relied upon to do just that.

Sadie, it can happen that tadpoles take more than one season to mature. Weird but true.

This is just down the road from us, so you've convinced me I should pay it a proper visit.
Don't enjoy shopping at Webbs otherwise, too showy, expensive and big for my liking... prefer other smaller garden centres which are not so slick.
All those purple signs, aaargh!
Great pictures though. What is the perennial (?) second pic down, to the r left of the white flowers please?

As unlikely as it sounds Im with you on this Grenville.Clearly Im daft but do try to keep things garden orientated my pet hate is being re-directed to other sites. We could all use other sites for information but would lose the sense of interaction this site has developed.Nice to share opinions doesnt have to be scientifically accurate just what works for us in similar situations.

Thanks Weeding,
I have to confess that I find all the text talk confusing -it's probably got a lot to do with the fact that I was a teacher and I tried to teach young children to read write and spell for 35 years, so I hope you understand!
Best wishes
Grenville.

With short apology to Grenville, I reckon LOL means "little old lady" which always puts people off using it for some reason! Fine by me though, as I know loads of LOLs who are brilliant gardeners, ho ho. They are the ones with lots of interesting experience and advice.
