New cascade

We’ve just put in a new cascade and filter box hoping this will keep the water clearer.

There’s still more to do and buy some more plants, it all looks a bit new at the moment but I’m sure in time it will blend in , and with the plants clumping up and covering some edges. I’d like to ask a question 1 of our fish is very blown up and looks like it’s going to explode any minute, has anyone got any ideas, thanks Roy.

I had 4 Platys in my indoor fish tank. They blew up, got fatter and fatter. I thought they were having young ones. Then they all died on the same day a week last Saturday.
Went to get some more.
The young man in the Pet Shop said I had been giving
them too much food. This was a teaspoonful twice daily.
Seems a bit mean giving just a pinch.
He said they should only be fed once daily anyway.
So I give them a large pinch.
Hope this helps.

Your fish either has a bacterial infection, cancer or parasites that is causing bloating. This bloating is called fish dropsy. With the exception of a cancerous tumor, this can affect the other fish in your pond. My advice sorry to say, is to immediately remove the fish from your pond put it in a bucket and fill the bucket with ice to euthanize the fish. Keep an eye on the other fish. If in time you see the same thing happening, inquire at a aquarium store for water treatments to control this problem if it develops further. Dianebully you purchased diseased fish at the pet shop and I really don't buy the reason the man at the pet store gave you. Also every time you buy fish or plants for your pond you take the chance of introducing bacteria, fungus or parasites into the water, just be aware of that. You may want to place some floating plants in the water such as water hyacinth. It gives the fish and their fry shade, shelter and roots to nibble on. It will also cut down on the algae growth taking nutrients out of the water. Water hyacynth is a fast grower so harvest it from you pond every so often and place them in your compost pile if you have one. Barley straw in a net bag placed in your filter box will also cut down on algae growth. One final tip, I place a garden hose into the pond every other day and run it for about five minutes letting the water overflow the pond. This helps to expel fish metabolic waste products from the water and don't worry the amount of chlorine you are introducing into the pond water is negligible and won't harm anything. Best Regards.

Thank-you Loosestrife for that information I'll have to do the done thing and get rid of it, Roy.

Thanks Alextb for your comments Roy.

When I read this my first thought was 'dropsy'. Agree with loosestrife that this is the best thing to do once chilled a sharp knock on the head will kill it painlessly. I tried the pure ice method and the fish was still 'flapping' 5hrs later.

I bought a bottle of 'Waterlife' treats fin rot and ulcers, which treats bacterial infection. It turned the water green, it didnt filter out for 8 weeks. They seemed ok after that. Two months later they swelled up again, then died.
I clean my tank walls every morning with an Algaescrub.
Syphon out about 4 pints of the water containing fish waste products, tip it through a sieve with a piece of kitchen roll in, then return the cleared water to the tank.
Every 2 weeks I change one gallon of the water. Its a
130 litre tank. My water must be alright.

Thanks for the Water Hyacinth advice, I will make enquiries, as this seems to be a good deterrent.

I used to use Barley Straw in my other outdoor pond.
Thank you Roy for raising this issue.

Thank-you Seaburngirl I was going to do it tonight when I fed them, but someone turned up, Roy.

Thank-you Dianebulley for your comments, the water hyacinths are spreading quite quickly now, Roy.

I am not sure about 2 of my fish who are squabbling. When the others did this before, I thought they were hungry and gave them more food to calm them. Seems this was a mistake now. It was the infection.

So this time I have now set up my 30 litre original tank
again, with the Waterlife treatment. Removed the two
fish who seem to have swollen stomachs already. They
are then away from the others.

I can watch them to see how they progress.
It may be a good idea to have a seperate small pond in the garden to use as a 'hospital' pond.
Fish keeping is certainly a challenge.

Thank-you Dianebulley I actually caught it earlier and now it's gone to fishy heaven, because I thought if it did explode it would infect the whole pond, you've got to be cruel to be kind, Roy.

just to clarify, dropsy is a symptom not an actual disease. it can be multi-causal from infection to environmental factors. It is caused when water collects in the body cavity, when the osmoregulatory system fails to remove excess water that continually enters the fish's cells. Its often associated with gut malfunctions.

9 Jul, 2014

Osmoregulation simplified: If you put one piece of potatoe in fresh water it will swell up.
If you put another piece of potatoe in salt water it will shrink.
If you put a third piece of potatoe in either fresh or salt water it's size will stay the same. Why is that? Well, that third piece of potatoe has kidneys! LOL!:)

All getting jolly technical. My two in the hospital tank seem ok. I will leave them in there for a month to see
what happens. All the others are ok.

Thanks again Seaburngirl that makes sense, osmoregulation new to me Loosestrife very good lol , interesting to see what happens Dianebulley ,thanks everyone Roy.
