My Hubbies Train room.

This will probably interest you men on here and thought it would make a change from gardening! After seeing the steam train built and completed by Grandmages hubby, I thought I would show you my hubbies train room. He has always had a train layout wherever he has lived and this one was built entirely from scratch. He’s not a joiner , but just has a go and usually it turns out ok. First of all he built his 40 foot shed and lined it quite a few times with wood, top, bottom and sides to insulate it. He then had electric put in. Because of the way it was built , there are two different layouts. It couldn’t be opened up fully as there were large supports holding the roof. It is nowhere near finished and never will be , as he keeps changing the layouts until he is happy with them. Over the years he has collected 40 steam trains OO gauge. This is mainly our winter hobby. When I’m not busy in the garden, I help him with the scenery. I haven’t done a lot this year because of taking the allotments on next door and as you will know , spent most of the year landscaping one. I hope you enjoy looking at this.

This is how it looked at the start.

This is the narrow long back part of the room.

I think on this one , you can just see the different layouts.

This one is at the back looking to the other side.

Showing a few of his trains.

Merlin. It was going quite fast , which is why its blurred.

The next pictures is my little area which I still haven’t finished. Each part of the layout, to make it look realistic takes weeks to do. Just making the buildings , which I mainly do from my own plan can take time, not to mention patience and maybe a few naughty words when it goes wrong! Lol.

This last one is the village allotments, still to be finished off!

I hope you haven’t been too bored , Ladies !

How clever, how do you make your little houses, they are fantastic.

11 Nov, 2012

Rose this is wonderful, going to show my hubby later on, I love it, the back gardens, the sheds, shrubs, trees and houses it is really wonderful.

Thanks Terra. I shall have to get in there this winter and help!
Lizziebee, when I first started building houses, shops etc , after a while the kits are all the same that you buy, so my son suggested I design my own using one of the bought kits as a template. For the terraced cottages , I made the three together on strong card. The hardest bit is cutting out all the little windows. Very fiddly. I made the windows from plastic sheets. I then painted them and while wet, threw Scatter on them (this is what makes the lawns) and then painted over them again making it look like a pebble dash effect.

What a wonderful creation

It's wonderful,Rose..what a lot of love and expertise has been put into a fantastic layout..I have just shown it to my OH too,and he is amazed at what you have both achieved..He was also a fireman on the steam trains so it is especially close to his heart ..thank you,we both really enjoyed seeing this .:o)

What fantastic scenery with houses and factories - and I LOVED the little allotments. Clever you! .... just a shame the trains got in the way! ;o)

12 Nov, 2012

Rose, tell your hubby that my hubby is very jealous of the size of his shed and that his layout is superb. :)

12 Nov, 2012

I enjoyed your train blog Rose, but like you (although I'm a man) I would be more interested in the scenery :o)

When I was little, I had an electric train, but I was more interested in the scenery then too lol. I used to buy little model houses, farms, etc. In the end, I had more scenery than trains :D

Fantastic, a little wonder world. How clever of you both.
Into faves!

Thanks Drc726 for your nice comments.
Thankyou Bloomer. A friend of my husbands was a fireman on the steam trains , years ago and he loved it.Im pleased you both enjoyed looking at it and will probably update it as it gets done.
Thanks Snoopdog, I agree!
Thanks Nariz. I love doing the scenes. I'm hoping I get back into it this winter, but it does get cold out there as there is only a small heater to warm such a large shed.
Grandmage, we both laughed at what you said and he is so chuffed with all the comments. Is your hubby alright today? I'm glad you enjoyed looking at it.
Thanks Hywel, thats the only part I'm interested in too and spend hours creating a scene!
Thanks Lulu, I appreciate that.

Rose - I just love it! My son-in-law is a keen railway modeller but his main layout, which was still at his father's home, has just been dismantled because father has moved. My daughter and s-i-l are house-hunting (they are in a flat, and have just had a baby boy), looking for somewhere with the right room for the trains (and the fish tanks, and the piano and organ and cello...) I think your models are really fantastic - the houses are so interesting and the allotments are going to be amazing. What a lovely hobby. As if you didn't have enough to do with your real gardens lol!

12 Nov, 2012

I have to say this is not my type of thing at all, BUT it is just wonderful, could not believe my eyes when I saw the layouts, and the work involved, it all looks so realistic, I really am lost for words.......and to be truthful you would find me in there having a crafty play, congratulations to the pair of you it is fantastic......

12 Nov, 2012

I really enjoyed this blog Rose ... and like some other members it's the scenery and buildings I have looked at ... more than the railway itself ... just don't tell your OH! ... Well done to both of you for creating something so enjoyable ... :o)

Hjya Mel, Thanks for your comments. It sounds like your daughter and husband will need a very large house to home all that! We've always had layouts and this is at the starting stage again after hubby taking it all down last year due to his disabilities. He's made it a bit easier to get around now, so have to start again with the landscaping. I should have a bit more time this winter, I hope!
Thanks Dottydaisy for your lovely comments. I must admit, I was unsure about putting it on at first, but I'm pleased I did now. I love to detail everything so that it looks real. I still have the allotments to finish. My next thing will be the rest of the village , pub, church and a wedding! In the last layout I even made a stream and village pond with people fishing. My husband is brilliant with the track and how it all runs .

12 Nov, 2012

Lovely - boys toys eh??!! lol

12 Nov, 2012

Rose,just found this.......
I love steam trains and think your train room is just wonderful.

The twins just have a wooden track with one small train - aah!!! But they love it and it is definitely their favourite toy!

The trains you have and the scenery are great and I could quite happily get involved!

12 Nov, 2012

Please do post the rest of the project when you have finished I would love to see it, sounds exciting, especially the stream, oh and the wedding!!

12 Nov, 2012

Well Rose hence the saying 'if you cant beat them, join them' !!!

13 Nov, 2012

Your right there Sheilar! It keeps him out from under my feet!
Thanks Chris, pleased you enjoyed looking at it. I don't think men or boys ever grow out of loving trains!
I will Dottydaisy, but it takes months of work , so it won't be for a while yet.
My thoughts exactly, Grandmage!

13 Nov, 2012

Hi Rose Great lay out. very nice scenery. Can see many years pride put in to it. Take care Tony

13 Nov, 2012

Thanks Tony. Yet again I'm pleased you liked it.

14 Nov, 2012

I'm am still impressed, Rose. We were in Glasgow at daughter's and s-i-l's yesterday and I insisted on finding your blog to show him. Very impressed - and admired your "corner". I'm afraid they will need a large place (we "climb over" stuff when we are there). They did get the piano moved out into storage yesterday, though!

(I suspect your husband is delighted to be starting again... but that might just be my evil mind! Mine is into designing and making Christmas decorations - everything and anything all year round. The various strategies for storing them are as much a hobby as the construction of them... forgive me if I sigh...love it really!)

14 Nov, 2012

Thanks once again Mel. If I can find any photos from previous "finished" layouts I will put them on here. I would have loved to have had a digital camera and computer when we did the last big one. Besides being a river going all the way round , there was a canal with barges and another height which were mountains and hillside with tracks running on this. Mind you, this was before this house and "gardening" took over! lol. You'll have to show us what you make!

14 Nov, 2012

how amazing Rose. a great passion for u guys to share..:-)

14 Nov, 2012

Thanks Sandra, it is and it helps to get us through the winter.

14 Nov, 2012

That would be a blog-and-a-half, Rose! I might put a few pics on when things get set out next month. There's nothing like a good hobby to keep up the enthusiasm, indoors or out.

14 Nov, 2012

Wow Rose that is fantastic and how good that its something you both can share, I`ll also admit it was the layout and all the scenes you have created that took my eye more than the trains but saying that I`d love to see it all in action.
I`m also awaiting next winters extra scenes, you are so clever and must have a lot of patience and I guess a very good eye for the details.....

17 Nov, 2012

Thanks Lincs, I love doing the intricate details the most and trying to make it look as realistic as possible and its great that we both have the same hobby. I'm like you, I prefer the landscaping side to the trains. If its a really cold winter , I won't be in there!

18 Nov, 2012

You should rent it out to film makers it is so realistic. I'm not interestesd in trains but I do love to see what people do to get realistic landscaping. Its good that you can help him achieve his goals. Clever you.

3 Dec, 2012

Thanks Scotsgran, I love to go in there and landscape , but I' m not as brave as hubby as its so cold in there and is a very big room to heat! When you are outside working, you are on the move, but in the train room are just sat in one place all the time! I shall have to get my thermals on! lol.

3 Dec, 2012

That looks like brilliant fun Rose. I love all the landscaping :o)

3 Dec, 2012

WoW Rose im so impressed, even tho most of us arent into this sort of thing we can't help but be in awe of it, What a fantastic hobby,Love the scenery and models, I would love to help out with the allotments and get some plants planted lol Clever you and hub, please keep us updated...

3 Dec, 2012

What can I say but, WOW!

3 Dec, 2012

Thanks Annella, it is good fun , but not when its cold! No heating, only a little convector heater!
Thanks Young Daisy , its a very slow and time consuming job , but will keep you all updated. We've just had some more trees and a village chapel delivered , so that will be my job!
Thanks Michaella, praise indeed coming from a clever lady like you!

Oh Rose I had to call my hubby to see this ,he is so envious ,he has a train room it's no way near this size , he makes his little trees and houses etc. it's in an Arcon which is one of those old prefabricated buildings people lived in after the war ,we have one in our garden .. like you we have no heating in there just a convector not so good in the winter !

4 Dec, 2012

Thanks Amy . I expect your hubbies layout would be N gauge! If it is, he must have a lot of patience as the kits are very small to make. Is an Arcon like the old bomb shelters, then?

5 Dec, 2012

amy
Amy

It's 00 gauge rose ... The arcon building is almost like a bungalow which would have had rooms like a normal building except they were constructed quickly for people who had been bombed out of their homes with corrugated metal walls and asbestos roofs , it's an amazing storage place the grandchildren have a full size table tennis table in one area ..I have grown shrubs and trees round it trying to hide it .....

5 Dec, 2012

Oops, sorry Amy! Perhaps you should pictures of it on here too! I would love to see it!

5 Dec, 2012

You'll need to go on ebay or one of those free to a good home websites (cr what they are named) and see if you can find a cheap or free second hand woodburner. That would keep you nice and warm.

5 Dec, 2012

amy
Amy

I wouldn't dare Rose it looks so scruffy with paint peeling off ,the parts inside where we store ladders garden equipment ,lawn mowers, shredders etc has cobwebs that would frighten dracula away .. that's why I'm trying to grow things to hide it , it was here when we came and is so useful but it's not worth spending money on ....

5 Dec, 2012

A lot of the prefabs as they were commonly named were built in Scotland. Many were demolished and new homes built on the sites but quite a few were bought by their residents and grants were eventually given to home owners to clad the outside of them and insulate them to present day standards. They came fully fitted with a fridge and washing machine and had central heating, very modern in the 1940's when they were chosen by the government as quick to build homes for the thousands made homeless by the war.

5 Dec, 2012

amy
Amy

You can see where our Arcon had some form of heating Scotgran there's a metal chimney coming out of the roof , I guess the first part of ours that you enter into was probably the kitchen area ,we use it as a garden potting room ,there are metal framed windows all round the building plus other doors that have long since seized up and rusted . the previous owners used it as a tack room for their daughters horse equipment ..it had obviously been used for parties as well as there were coloured streamers hanging from the ceiling in one part :o)

5 Dec, 2012

Now I'm confused, Amy. Where does your hubbies train layout fit in all of this! lol

6 Dec, 2012

http://aghs.jimdo.com/acocks-green-s-vulnerability/prefabs-updated/ is a fascinating history of prefabs like the one you own Amy. I can not find the website I looked at earlier but from the one above I found that some are listed buildings. I think I made a mistake about the washing machine, it was a boiler and the CH might just have been just a stove. The fact that they had bathrooms was a real improvement for most of the people who moved in to them.

He has a room sectioned off at one end Rose with a heater in it .. I must have a look at that Scotsgran , we have been told that it was used by someone who use to do upholstery before this place was built ,it must have been in the corner of the field by it's self .

6 Dec, 2012

Scotgran that is identical to ours LOL except we don't have all the mod cons we do have electric lights , the walls had been taken out of ours my hubby put walls up to make his train room , Thank for showing me ,I'd never bothered to look before :o))

6 Dec, 2012

You're welcome. Its another little bit of history for you.

6 Dec, 2012

I looked at this as well, Scotsgran and Amy. I bet they would do up quite well. You must have a lovely large garden Amy to have this in it!

We have 1/2 an acre Rose ,it takes some keeping up with these days , we have a field of brambles next door the birds drop the seed in our garden which means we are forever pulling up small bramble plants before they become established and take over :o(

7 Dec, 2012

Brambles are lovely in the right place , but are a devil to get rid of! It took me ages to clear my allotment garden when I took it on! Ooh, 1/2 an acre, Amy, I'd love that!
