Rain stopped play...or should I say work!

Part One…Do you remember the bog garden pictures , I think it was my walk round the garden in June, but the Aruncus Goats beard although absolutely beautiful is too tall for the front of the pond and many of the other plants are too, especially the yellow bog iris’s, so as hubby had put a water lily in this pond last year, it never did see the light of day as it was in too much shade from all these plants……

We are looking from the back of the pond, so you can see why the poor lily didn’t flower. So I thought to myself, drastic action needs to be taken. I usually do the jobs first and then tell hubby !
First of all, I had to get every single plant out of the bog garden and that was no mean feat , I can tell you! Some of the bigger plants , at first refused to move, but when I’m determined, no plant stands a chance! lol.

This is only one half of the garden and before I took the rest out, I thought it would be a good idea to incorporate a seating area for hubby to sit and watch the wildlife in the pond.

This was done over a couple of days . I then had to go to the back of the pond and dig up the paving slabs so that the tall bog plants could be then planted at the back and to keep the front for smaller plants like astilbes.

This is looking across to the bog area where I ha d to remove all the pebbles , which I can tell you was a very slow job!

Looking up the bog area…

I started planting the primula denticulatas and I won’t be replacing the pebbles until all the astilbes and other small plants appear. The tall iris’s have been planted at the back of the pond with the Aruncus and am keeping my fingers crossed that everything takes. Watch this space! The seating area is finished with most of the pebbles underneath the seat.

The next blog which shows the finished area will probably be in the summer when all the plants are grown and in flower. I hope !

A lot of work you`ve been doing Rose, those jobs I know are time consuming and very messy but it will be worth it when hubby and you can sit and admire his lily, I have the yellow Iris in my pond and know they can get very tall and do spread well, I`m always thinning them down, the smaller blue one is also a good one, if allowed free range they would take over..

No Barbara , its not! I would have to sit on his knee! Although we have 2 seats like this, I didn't want to take up too much border for another seat. As I didn't line the new back border , I'm hoping it doesn't dry out too quickly.

Thanks Lincs, I transplanted a clump of blue iris's but at the moment look a bit sorry for themselves.

Rose I feel tired just reading about what you've been doing!
A wonderful effort and you well deserve a good sit down on that bench, with OK bringing you tea and (chocolate) biscuits.

I'm growing aruncus in a border so I don't think it will mind not being in a bog garden - it might even reduce the height slightly with less moisture at the root

I can see your drumstick primulas in the last photo. Mine are settling in now.
I think it's a good idea to re-arrange the plants. They'll look and grow better now.

Thanks Hywel. i think mine had a slight set back due to moving them and then leaving them until I had finished this area. But they are picking up now and Im pleased yours are ok.
