Woodpigeon at our birdtable and birdbath

I took Sandra’s advice and, at long last, managed to get a close up shot of this woodpigeon by creeping up behind him. When I have tried this before with other garden birds they have flown away but I was extra quiet this time and put my camera on maximum zoom. Thanks Sandra I will now try to take more shots of other garden birds when they come into the garden. :-)

We used to have a woodpigeon visit our garden regular as clockwork. he knew when we would be out to feed our hens and seconds after venturing outside, we heard a clattering of wings and there he was!! We even named him "Bob"! he would come down to feed, even when we were still pottering about and we could get quite close... they have amazing yellow eyes!! We havent seen him for a while....unless he has really changed his habits, or is even half of one of the 2 pairs we now get visiting..... we also get one, singular sparrow visiting.... I havent seen a sparrow in our garden for years!! We'd love to see your pics of all your feathered visitors. we will have to get some pics of ours too :)

Thanks for your visit Emmaj. I hope I will be able to take some more pics in this way. They usually fly away. When we lived in SouthWales we used to get dozens of sparrows and Jackdaws in our garden and so did everyone else-they don't seem to be here around Leicestershire. :-)
Thanks Megan glad you like the photos :-)
Thank you Sandra you have been a great help :-)

Thanks Mavisc52. I like feeding the birds I hope they don't decide to chomp through my young seedlings and plants though when they start to come up through the ground :-)
Thanks again Sandra happy snapping it will be from now on :-)

Great pics Richard. We have one who comes here and we've nicknamed him the Colonel as he's a beast! Huge frame on him but very handsome!

great to have a variety of birds out there:0))

Thanks Dan. The Colonel told me he was the handsomist beast in south wales when I was down there last week. It must be all that welsh air he's getting ..lol :-)

These pigeons make me laugh. I have two visit me and they try to out-eat each other! Great close up photo and I love your big wagon wheel :)

Thanks Gee. The wagon wheel is actually plastic but I knocked it about a bit and painted it so it looks a bit more like wood. I need to paint the back fence though..lol I am waiting for some better weather! :-)

It fooled me, Richard! Putting up a new small shed today (well, my son in law and grandson are doing the work) so thankfully the weather is dry and sunny :)

It is always useful to have a shed Gee. I have to get mine sorted inside as it is getting full of things. I can get the chairs out of there soon for the summer that will give me some more room :-)

The photos of "your" woodpigeon are very, very good, Richard! Other than in size how do you tell a woodpigeon from a Ringed/Collared Dove? We have lots of both of them around here. The Doves almost always seem to go around in pairs whereas the pigeons seem to be more "independent".

Looking at your photos again I think I've discovered the answer: the Woodpigeon doesn't have a ring/collar around his neck like the Doves!

Thanks Balcony. I am not 100% sure that it is a woodpigeon but I thought it was one. This one has some brown on its front I don't think collared doves have that colour chest -but if anyone could enlighten me I would like to know what the difference is also :-)

I did a search on Google for both of them & your photos above are definitely Woodpigeons! I also looked at both of them on the RSPB website. They only have drawings there, no photos. I did find some photos, however, when I searched for these birds.

Thanks Balcony I'm glad you found out. He comes back most days now to see what is on the table and then has a drink from the birdbath.
