Solar water features are great for gardens without a power/electricity source.
Things to be aware of
- many of the internet retailers seem to be selling the same products (that cascading terra-cotta water feature seems to be everywhere!) and may be getting them from the same supplier
Terracotta solar water cascade feature
- most come with a separate solar panel and cable that need to be placed in direct sunlight
- look out for how long the cable to the solar panel is so you can see where the feature and the panel can be placed in your garden
- some can use both solar power or battery power depending on the weather conditions
How solar water features work
Instead of getting the power for the water pump from batteries or the mains these products are powered by a solar panel that needs to be placed in direct sunlight. The solar panels converts sunlight into an electric current by the photovoltaic effect (Read more about Solar Cells on wikipedia). It is sometimes not clear form the photos of products shown that the solar panel is not actually part of the water feature and that it has to be connected by a cable. So just be aware that the solar panel will have to be placed near your water feature, and that there will be a potentially ugly cable running to it.
