Ok, guys, not a garden question. Define “cheeky” I see the word is used a lot and in many differenct contexts. It does not seem overly offensive, eh?

Is cheeky person a smart a**? Nervy? Fresh? Snotty? Snippy? Insulting? Offensive?

Ok I would define 'cheeky' as offensive, sometimes only very mildly so, as in a child like manner, but also it can be a little more severe, as in someone saying to someones face that their a** is fat.

hahaha! My first thought was it is fun, as in 'Cheeky Chops'!!!!! Very mildly chiding but with a smile! Then I remember my Mum used to say to me, 'Don't be cheeky' all the time, when I probably 'answered back'! Like so many English words and terms, it can have different meanings when used in different texts!

~depends what they are doing to warrant being called cheeky and of course whether you are saying it in an angry manner or in fun!
Isn't the English language wonderful!

which in a written form makes it harder to interpret. I have this strong feeling it is not only english that have "slang" terms but I do believe it lends itself to more of them.

Remember Dick Emery in his desperate young female persona correcting an interviewer 'It's Miss' and always finishing up with 'Oooooo you are cheeky ..............but I like you', then wobbling off on her high heels and falling off them. Nothing offensive there.

I'm in total agreement, Mookins - any reference to my rear end puts people in physical danger - only I am allowed to comment on it!

As someone who grew up with a British mother, any British person will tell you that "cheeky" means rude, and so rude that what generally followed "don't get cheeky with me" was a swat to the head, and two if you had really crossed the line! I am a child of the fifties, and my mother is a Blitz survivor from London, all 5'2 of her, but she could put fear into anyone when she wants to!
