Hi, soon we will be moving to a much smaller garden (approx 20'x30') which I will find much easier to manage etc. The garden will be almost a blank canvas.. My question is what would be good plants for a clay soil, east west facing garden please.

Roses do well in clay

You can really bring the garden into this great room. How exciting for you.
Roses do well in clay and would smell good. I would put lots of pots on the patio with things like Heucheras (evergreen) and as already mentioned some sort of water feature could look and sound good.
Over that low wall I would grow something like phlox subulata 'Emerald cushion blue'. and the wall at the end would lend it self to a climber - Clematis, something like 'Victoria' or
'The President' to compliment the phlox on the low wall.
Easy to get carried away here lol.
