Potting on a Rose Cutting -

Hello folks, I've managed to get a rose cutting to root in water - how longs should I let the roots grow before I pot it into soil?

I intend to put it in a small pot of multi-purpose compost initially, then plant it out when it has developed a decent root ball. Will this be ok, and does anyone have any recommendations for planting out?
