Just point it in the right direction it will do the rest. I have several round the garden and now just have to trim them back, but be careful when they get bushey as blackbirds love to make nests in them.

Ivy has litte roots which cling on to anything and everything -that is why its so good at climbing up walls and fences - I dont think you will have a problem with it climbing - just be patient while it gets going and before long you will be asking how to stop it!!!

Get yourself some raffia and tie tendrils to trellis .

Raffia wont harm stems.

Good luck.

As scokat says ,tie it in. But Ivy does prefer walls and solid fencing as it suckers to climb naturally.
