How do I get the seeds from a silver fir to germinate?

Tree seeds often need a period of cold to start germination.
I would plant in the autumn in a pot and leave it somewhere sheltered but cold like a cold frame or cold gh (I cover with a net to stop hungry mice) and hope that they germinate in the spring.......
