Can cutting off the flowering shoot of an agave plant save it from dying?

We have a huge (about 6 feet in diameter) agave plant that is now blooming. I know once it blooms, it dies. Can cutting the shoot off save the plant?

If its already in flower, probably not - might have worked if you'd removed the bud earlier, though I'm not sure.
