Can I take the tops off my potatoes

I have grown some first early Rocket potatoes in tubs but they are extremely top heavy with stalks 2 feet or more high, can i lop the stalks off before they have flowered?

Hi Roger you really can't do that as the stalk is needed to send energy down for the potatoes to grow. I'm surprised the stalks are so tall, did you fill tub 1/3rd full of compost and push the tatties in and then keep adding compost as the stalks grew?
