Hello Jacque I have just rushed in from the garden to say as Owdbody suggests Hesperis, the candida has hairless leaves but white flowers, so I wonder if it could be a cross with the lilac flowered ones. You might have a new cultiva!!

Our honesty is still in full flower. Must admit the leaf shape makes me think it must be honesty. But I could well be wrong.

19 May, 2009

We have one this colour in the garden, been here for as long as we have. Must have planted it, but since it has seeded around, it has moved a long way from any original label.
We do not have Honesty, yet!

By the way there are commercially available different forms of it. This one could well be H.m. lilacina.

I don't know what this is, let me just say, but I don't think it's a wildflower at all. The flowers LOOK like daphne, but those heart shaped leaves aren't right. And it's definitely not honesty, leaves aren't right for that either, nor is it Hesperis, again, leaves aren't right.

Never Mind Mims im just so happy with it being in my garden its name dont matter that much :)

19 May, 2009

Wow! That's such a lovely plant you have there Jacque. Four feet tall too - blimey.

19 May, 2009

Thanx MBD :)

Ok, then it is a definite crucifer (the shape of the flowers is a cross made up of a pair of opposite petals). Big family though.
The leaves look right to me, if a little large, but then if the plant is as tall as that then the leaves are going to be big too.
Will go and take a picture of mine when it stops hailing and then we can compare.

I first thought that this was a phlox, but it is definitely Hesperis matronalis as far as I'm concerned, as the first pic under Google Images I looked at was exactly like this in flower and leaf form. Beautiful pic, Jacque. :-)

Thanx Boggy /David :)

I know what u mean SK the Flower & Leaf seem to be a Rite Muddle dont they ? looks like 1 but not other ? Wonder if i/we`l ever Know ? lol

I personally would say its dames violet, the lunaria rediviva is said to have hairy stems and the leaves are sharply toothed and the upper leaves are stalked where as the dames violet has shorter stalked toothed leaves

VERY fragrant LUCKY YOU

26 May, 2009

Hi Jacque, I'm so chuffed 'cos I've realised that I've got this plant too! I ordered Sweet Rocket plants which hadn't started flowering properly when you posted, but now that they are blooming they are the same as yours except that they are only 3'3" and perhaps not so wide.
Yours was a lovely photo.
