how can i stop snails getting into my pear tree

Your Pear has fruit already?!?!?! This won't help with the snails already on the tree but if you secure a band of materiel at least 4" wide around the trunk and then spread Vaseline over it evenly you will have created a barrier that snails won't pass. Good Luck!
