Hallo to you all. My little friend....a black-grey lizard has turned up again in my garden....where the mains water taps are....always dark and moist, can anybody identify it for me. I have searched in google but havn´t come up with any proper answers.....here are two photo´s. Thanks for any answers.

Are you sure it isn't a newt? The dark colour is rather like that compared to the common European skink or lizard. The thick head also is rather newt like. On the other hand it looks dry with a lizard's skin. Have you tried posting it on the European Field Herping Forum?

Hallo Bertie. Thanks for your answer. To tell you the truth I can´t tell the difference between a newt and a lizard..... I have been to the website that you have suggested and have just registered with them, I´m now waiting for conformation of registration. I will then ask the question with the 2 photo´s. I will keep you informed of any answers that I get.

My thought was also a baby newt. Ours have just started emerging from the pond but prefer to stay in moist places. Also, I have never had a lizard stay still long enough to get a decent first photo never mind a second!!!!!!

I too would have said newt rather than lizard, lizards prefer basking in the sunshine on stone walls, rocks and similar and vanish at the speed of light as soon as they sense your presence.

my first thought was reptile, but the toes seem clawless. and against the size of the brick seem rather small even for a wall lizard. However the head does look rather broad for a newt and has the 'boxy' part where its ears are located.

ooh hope you get an answer

Whatever it is, he's lovely - I haven't seen a newt or lizard for years, not since I was a kid...

As Bulba says this is the time of the year the baby newts emerge from our pond... great to see - and a time when we have to be careful on one of our walks as baby frogs are all across the path.

Hallo all again. Thanks for all the replies to my question. I did as Bertie said and I went to the website that he advised, got logged in and put the 2 photo´s in, after a hour or so I got a reply...they say that it is a Ichtyosaurus alpestris...(Alpine newt).......so another mystery solved. Any other details that I get to know of I will let you know.
