I have masses of Aubretia as ground cover .... Trouble is I'm not sure what to do with it as a lot of it is a bit brown and straggly in places .. Can I cut it back to where it emerges from the ground to grow nxt year or will that kill it ??

Yes you can cut it back very hard and it will return.

I trim mine immediately after flowering each year to a diameter of about 8-10 inches and I don't get the centres going brown and leggy.

You may have to trim almost to the exact centre of the plant if your centres are leafless..
