Tree very close to a house wall
Asked on 24 Apr, 2008
This question is on Hick's yew
A hick's yew's main root is only 30cm away from a house wall. The tree now is 8 feet tall. May I know if it's roots would penetrate the basement wall.

Thank you for the information. I am in Canada. Another name for the tree is Hicksii. I bought my house last year and I am still hesitated about how to deal with this evergreen plant.

Hallo Sharon - welcome to GOY. I am sorry but I don't know the tree you are referring to. Do I gather that you are not in the UK? Do you know the latin name of your tree? It isn't in any of my books under Hick's Yew. On the whole, it is not wise to grow any trees too close to house walls, as roote go sideways as well as down, and can therefore damage foundations.
