I have a variety of pernicious weeds in my lawn.Can I safely use roundup to try and get rid of them?

No, whatever you do, don't use Round up on a lawn, well if you want a lawn afterwards that is.
You are restricted, I'm afraid, to Lawn Weedkillers - the best is probably Verdone 2, which is a liquid which you dilute in a can and water on. Otherwise its Weed and Feed granular products, with or without mosskillers.
