My back lawn is like sponge, appently because the land was formally a pond site. Also, 2 feet down is a large clay bed so the water has knowhere to go. what can i do to make it firmer and stop all my garden chairs sinking into the ground every time we site on them?

Sounds like you need a drainage expert - you need the land to drain properly or your lawn will always be a sponge. Take some professional advice from a reputable company.
