PALM TREE - What's wrong??

Hi all.
A friend has a palm tree in their garden and it has been fine for 10 years but a few weeks ago, the bark starting peeling away and she can see no reason why. She's worried it may be dieing and is not sure what to do.
Anyone got any ideas why this may be happening and if there are any remedies?

Some kind of damage, possibly weather related. I'm assuming this is a Cordyline australis, though you've not said. Nothing she can do but wait and see what happens - if it starts oozing or gets smelly, should be cut right down to the base, which should induce new growth off the roots or base of the trunk.
