Little pots of alpine plants from the alpine section of a Garden Centre are not expensive and they will all spread after planting. Sometimes they sell them in mixed trays and those are often cheaper. Anything sold as an alpine will suit a rockery.

Check out the 'sale' or 'bargain' areas of retail outlets selling plants; look for alpines that are not too far past their best, many of them respond well to a little TLC.

Welcome to GoY!! Have you not got plants already in your garden that you can transfer into the rockery? - it would save you money if you have

Our local market has plant stalls that are resonable or carboots/tabletop sales just check how big they will grow

Car boots are a good place to find cheap plants too. If friends or neighbours have anything you fancy ask for a little bit. It doesn't take much to get them growing. You want to be looking at the A-Z at the foot of the page and identify what you have already from A and Alpines and R and Rockery ideas. Big supermarkets like Morrisons are very reasonable for plants. Your 3 foot diameter rockery could easily be covered by about 5 different plants quite quickly. Big splashes of colour are often more effective and a lot cheaper than a rockery planted up with expensive alpines. As you have the cash you can add bulbs etc. Most of us started on a tight budget and it is surprising what you can do with 50p plants from the local church fete for example. Save some money for a feature plant and then you will be off and we will all watch with interest.

Which part of the country are you in? Alpines as suggested above, plus herb type plants may be useful in view of future drought - rosemary, thyme, lavender, all of which have lovely flowers and are scented. There is also the 'poached egg plant' available as seed from your local garden centre, that could provide an edging or base to the rockery. Aubretia/iberis plugs are 1.49 at the moment.

If you are on the right side of the Mersey, take yourself off to Ness Gardens next Sunday and have a look at the AGS stall. I can guarantee some £1 a time Alpines there!
