You can cut back to the ground in early March but never in autumn, I guess the old and dying stuff makes for some protection from the cold winter weather!

Thanks for th I have only just tidied them up last weekend when we had a lovely sunny Sunday. Some leaves were eaten a bit and others dried up so I removed them. I can see the new growth coming so will give them a couple of weeks and have a more drastic tidy then.
