in our compost bin this year we have lots of white threadlike worms as well as the usual red worms, could these be the threadworms that children often pickup through poor hygeine

Absolutely no. They live in the body and are caught from person to person. I am afraid I don't know the type of worm you have in your compost - are you sure that they are worms? Sounds a silly question but I wondered if you'd looked closely at them.
