propagating a rose

a single red rose put into a vase of water has sprouted a new shoot with leaves from the stem. How do I further the growth? The rose was taken from a wreath on my father's coffin and we feel the new growth is a 'sign'.

i agree with doctorbob 1 , a quality compost with plenty of air circulation and moderate watering.
