Can't remember whether this is an orange or lemon tree. Brought it indoors from garden a month ago before the frosty weather (which hasn't come to Bournmeouth yet!) How do I stop the leaves from falling, and should i cut down the long branch which now has no leaves. I am regularly 'misting' the leaves with a water spray, and watering the saucer once or twice a week. Is now kept in kitchen. Any advice would be welcome, thank you.

If it has spines along the branches, as yours appears to have, then it's a lemon tree. Sorry , but I will leave others to advise you on its care.

In the kitchen, I am afraid it will be far too warm, and you may lose it, Shepsno1. Is there somewhere light and cool you could overwinter it? An unheated conservatory, a heated greenhouse or a closed porch? They really only need to be kept from freezing. Cut down watering, too. Don't cut the leafless branch until spring - you never know, it might still be alive!

The easiest way to tell if it's a lemon or an orange is to take off one of the leaves, crush it in your hand and smell it. The smell of lemon or orange should be very strong. Even the difference between an orange and a tangerine can be detected from smelling the leaves.

Thanks for the replies.
Have crushed a leaf and the smell is indeed lemon.
Will find somewhere cooler for it tomorrow.
