I am going to plant some bulbs in hanging baskets for spring using trailing ivy around the sides.I have never done one before so when they are all planted only the ivy will be visable..these will look a bit sad until spring won't they..would you still hang them up or wait until the bulbs start to appear. This is probably a daft question but I'm trying to get my head around how bare they are goint to look for a few months. Thanks

I often pop in the mini cyclamen to give a splash of colour. And the ivy looks nice too.
I always hang mine up for a bit of colour. :o)

Stick a tiny conifer or small evergreen shrub in it - garden centres have these available at this time of year for baskets. The shrubs are just cuttings of large shrubs, but obviously small enough for baskets now.

how about a few pansies around the edge?

I do this each year but to give more winter interest/colour,
I also put in Pansies and/orPrimulas. The Pansies will flower till late Dec. In January the bulbs start with the Snow drops first, then come the mini Narcissus and Crocus, Lillies, Chinodoxia then the Primulas and in early March back come the pansies finishing with the miniature Tulips.
I use an Ivy that has grown over the summer so its got some length and use bent wire to pin it round the baskets
Use new compost but dont feed till spring and only water if very dry over the winter.
I find 16" baskets are needed to take all this though.

I like to pop in a Polyanthus or two. The suggestions above are all good as well.

Yes Drc looking forward to seeing a before and after photo.

It will be so colourful.

I also plant a Helebore in my basket and some violas and spring bulbs.

As the foliage leaves are stunning till all blooms come out.
