could any 1 tell me the best way of getting rid of a tree stump

the answer really depends on how big and what it is? You might want to make a feature of it. in our previous house hubby turned two ornamental cherries into seats for the girls. on the rare times we drive passed they are still there.
you might need to remove them if you have fungal disease as they will be a food source for them. [i have honey fungus so i do take them out]
Dig around the stump as much as you can and with an axe, loppers or saw cut through large roots as you come to them. there will come a point when it will come clear. if it is a big stump be careful as it will be heavy. A crow bar or spike can also help to prise it free. I have seen people then tow big ones out with their car!
hope any of this may be of help.

you could hire a stump grinder or pay for it to be ground out to soil level too.
