Pruning techniques
Is there a particular way of pruning buddleia (weyeriana) to make it more bushy? Mine looked a bit leggy and lanky this year! Have the same issue with my red one whose proper name escapes me for the minute.

i have 4 of them and every autumn i reduce them by around a third, then a chelsea chop the following year by a third again, that seems to work for me...

That will be Davidii Royal Red Maybe ?

I would leave it until early march and prune it hard. Hard pruning Buddleia extends their lifespan as well as improving their look. They are tough plants and will bounce back from loads of abuse.

Thank you, yes thats the one! I have in the dark recesses of my mind something about pinch pruning to make things bush out ad promote side branching, does that ring any bells?

You can prune these at anytime and the worst you could do is lose some of the flower. Frankly you could not kill one with a hired assassin. Take it hard back at least by a third as Surreylad says.

You must be psychic, Pimpernel. I haven't a clue! Answers, please, on a postcard.......

I give mine a tidy up about this time of year, probably by about a third or a bit more if you want to and then in spring prune it again down to the first bud or budding point so thats normally very close to the base.

I'm with Pimpernel on this - hack it back whenever you like, it always grows back more.

Oh Thank you Beattie! Are you the resident guru on acronyms, then? I'll come directly to you next time. When I saw your answer it was a case of raflmao.

I have to look up some acronyms too Gattina, and some remain a mystery. A friend had me befuddled with "IRAO" - I couldn't work it out or come up with anything sensible from the online lists. I'll give you a chance with it - perhaps you know it already?

How do I say thanks?
