A section of my privett hedge (about 4 plants) looks dead this year.

I noticed last summer that this particular section did not grow as much as the rest, now it is brown dry and leafless
The whole hedge is about 30 yards long and I think its as old as the house, getting on for 80 years. the rest of the hedge looks totaly fine. I have not used any chemicals near the hedge, I have no idea how this could have happened. Could constant visits from dogs cause this?
