I would like some help planning for next autumn. My garden is looking a bit sad now because I haven't planned well for flowering plants for autumn this year. I have heleniums, ligularia, nasturtiums, sedums and crocosmia in flower just now, but that's about it.
Bearing in mind that I live in the frozen north, what suggestions can anyone make for perennials I could consider for a better show this time next year?
Thanks.

That's quite lot in flower, really, Ojibway - and I'm amazed you've got Crocosmia in flower now, ours all finished weeks ago. Schizostylus and some Nerine bowdenii bulbs, Asters, Dahlias, primrose/primula, they flower in Autumn a bit as well.

Thanks,Bamboo. I had forgotten about Schizostylis, I had them in my last garden and they flowered right through to end November. Must put it on my list.
And yes, latitude and altitude make a big difference to what flowers when - my crocosmia only came into flower last week!

my crocosmia has only flowered in the last couple of weeks, perhaps it's the variety. Have you tried a 'Winter Jasmine'?

Heathers will give a good show, some Huecheras and Anemones, Asters. What about Helleborus (Christmas Rose) Septembers 'Gardeners World' has a ten plants for £15 offer on. Send me a PM if you want more details.

The garden has to rest at some point. I think you should look at evergreen shrubs with berries.

Michaelmas Daisies (perennial asters) give good colour right now. Sedum is in flower too but the star of my borders at the moment is Rudbeckia - these perennials have been flowering for what seems like weeks.

Yep, agree with what Grannyb says - I never really think about flowers, but like lots of colour - so I choose different colour leaves, variegated leaves, large and small/fine leaved for contrast, berried plants - after all, that's what you're looking at most of the year, isn't it?

Thanks to all of you for the helpful suggestions. You've given me lots of ideas.

I know they're not perennials, but I like Skimmias for their autumn through to spring flowers. Being evergreen gives you some winter structure, too.

One I forgot, just planted some today - Liriope. I particularly like L. Silvery Sunproof.

Some members have clematis and roses flowering now too. I find it a good idea to click on Garden Pictures and you'll see what members currently have in flower.

How do I say thanks?
