Hi, I have been nurturing an agapanthus for two years I think it's called Black Panther, and is a deep purple. It is in a large pot outside but I am worrying about what to do with it in winter. Should I bring it into an unheated greenhouse over winter.... or leave it where it is. I would hate to lose it as it flowered for the first time this year.

Its quite difficult to find the information, but finally I've managed to establish this one's only just frost hardy, so suggest you move it somewhere frost free for the winter. It'll stand a mild winter outside, but the forecast for this year is appalling, worse than last year, so when and if it gets really arctic, move it to shelter.

With Agapanthus it is often wet conditions that damage them. A soaked dormant plant which gets frozen solid for more than a week may die altogether. To overwinter pots or troughs containing Agapanthus or other container plants they are best stored in a sheltered place on their side, check often for slugs, snails etc. cover with straw in very severe weather. I have overwintered zonal geraniums using this method.

Um, it was me who mentioned the forecast for this winter. Its Exactaweather, the same person who forecast last year's bad weather...
The hardiness info was a brief mention in the text on the Crocus website for this plant.

Mine is a tender one,as far as I am aware..but it overwinters well,in a plastic growhouse..or the shed.I overwrap it with fleece, when all the foliage has died down, snipping the remaining bits off,and leave it till next year..and I never water it till I see new growth emerging..Never had a problem..and it was lovely this year again..hope this helps, good luck.

thankyou bloomer most helpful, have loads of buble wrap so will do as you say and put it in the greenhouse.

I would only use the bubblewrap around the pot,Lisa,,as it needs to breathe..and it might go mouldy if its over the top of the plant..if you don't have any garden fleece, you can buy it by the metre at garden centres, only about 65p..or a pound shop or wilkinson's in small packs..
