can someone explain to me why my lettuces grown under a mesh clotch have disappeard they were just ready to thin out, but alas no where to be seen.there were no signs of any soil disturbance

That would be my guess too mate. Unless the cloches are open ended and you've some BRAVE pigeons.

Check the soil for Chafer grubs as well! Creamy-coloured large grubs with a brown head and three sets of legs. Nasty!

How long ago was the previous visit and were there any shiny slug/snail trails or holes for small flying visitors?
