I planted 2 fuschias in pots this year and what a lovely show they provided as you can see by the photo. If I plant them in the garden will they be ok over winter?

Do you know the variety? Some are hardy and some not, but as many of the flowers are very similar it can often be difficult to tell from a photo. Were they sold as bedding fuchsias? If so they will be tender and need wintering indoors in a cool room. They should be left almost dry and will lose their leaves. In early spring you can cut the old wood down to about six inches, water them and spray with water several times until you see a little new growth appearing. They will need to be in more warmth and light then.

Hardy ones can be treated the same if you are not sure, but if you are, they can be planted outside with the crowns several inches below soil level. This should be done straight away to give them a change of establishing before dormancy.
